So, not only did you deliver junk mail that 99.9% of the population simply throw in the recycle bin, your employer then followed up with a random cold telephone call !!

If such a thing happened to me I would tell the person that as all junk mail is classed as 'direct to recycling' that is exactly what happens to it, and I don't keep a log of what I throw away.

I'd probably add that as a result of their annoying behaviour I'd make a point of never using their company or product.

Choose a busy friday or saturday night and phone the takeaway to complain about receiving junk mail despite having a notice up saying no junk mail.

If your on the phone for a while asking for the manager or the owner it may get them to instruct the person that delivers the next batch to take note of the notices.

It could cost them an order.

Or post the chinese leaflets to the indian takeaway forgetting to put stamps on. Mark the packet/ letter urgent / important.

Find out if your area is in a no cold calling zone and if it is, get their details and pass onto TS

I don't think it is unfortunately. How would I find out? I think my area is a cold caller's dream. Lots of houses very close together.

I had a call from a charity yesterday. They always start with "how are you?" I replied skint. The man said Oh! OK. Goodbye.

I get people at the door too! as if? I am going to hand over money to anyone who knocks. They stand NO CHANCE.
If I have the time I play a waste their time game and let tham tell be all about it before saying NO.

    Q. How do you confuse Jehovah's Witness cold callers?

    A. Answer the door and say "Come In!"

    ;)

I did that once - we were selling our flat and I thought they'd come to view :o:o:o They did look surprised!

I've got quite good at dealing with cold callers/charities. I generally just say sorry I don't give a definite answer without all the facts - if you've a leaflet you could leave me with I'd happily look it over and think about purchasing your product/donating to your charity.

I feel that's the right compromise. Some of them have no choice (as someone posted, their boss would check up that they'd been to the houses they should have) so I don't want to be rude and get them in trouble. It also means that I can actually process the information at my own speed and make my own decision with the partner, instead of feeling pressured and making a rushed decision that I may regret.

Just a suggestion for those that said they struggle with the whole telling people to go away part...

  • Actually, charities are exempt from laws that prevent traders from ignoring your wishes.

    Really, I'm amazed.

They are after all selling something, be it 'feel good about yourself', 'moral superiority' or 'smugness' or whatever, but they are definitely 'selling'.

What about the fact that most charity chuggers/doorsteppers are actually employed by a commercial organisation that makes money from you signing up??? Does that make it 'selling'??
  • Had a phone conversation with someone who started by saying:

    "Hello, I'm not selling anything"

    "Why not?"

    "Well er I'm not"

"Why are you phoning me and not trying to sell me anything?"

    "Er umm" :D

    "Goodbye"

I had a similar phone-call a short while ago. It started with, "Hello, I'm not trying to sell you anything, the call will take less than a minute, and I won't ask you any questions.

Hmmm...this is going to be an interesting conversation.
