True, and I always do better when running in a group than alone although I loathe running with people generally. Went for a run after work tonight, set a timer for 20 minutes so ran along the canal path until it went off then turned around and headed back towards my car, ran 3.5 miles and it took me 42minutes. So planning to keep doing that maybe once a week until it gets too dark and see what kind of distance I can add on to it along with trying to get back in to the habit of going out for a run near home after work a couple of times a week.

Perhaps that's why. Your times are better when you try to lose them...

Take a torch. You may not aim to run in the dark, but there's many a slip twixt cup and lip....

Nowhere near work you could run?

Near work is where I ran tonight - planning to chuck my head torch in to the car but should be ok for a few more weeks running just after work as long as I'm finishing at or near to on time.

Take it with you when you run. It doesn't weigh much, and you only need to mis-estimate the time once...

I take it that it's quite rural there?

Yup, the industrial area I work on it on the outskirts of town and has the canal running along the back, so I leave our car park and drop on to the canal from the second access road - tonight I ran away from town which is lovely and rural, I'd have got to the nearest village if I'd kept going another half a mile or there abouts.

Well as you get faster, you may very well do that. However, you may then see villagers with torches and pitchforks shouting "There's that woman who served me with a cardboard cup!"

This is true, and the burning torches (and witches and other paraphernalia) will provide light to see... :T
