Once the proposed payouts have been made, I foresee quite a dramatic drop in share price and I'm not 100% convinced that a nice dividend will do much more than compensate for the loss.

Look at Cairn. They sold off a large part of the business and paid cash.
They have been trying to find more oil since but nothing yet hence a lowly share price

I think its a law of arbitrage that any future gains are anticipated in the price though this can vary, it should roughly track the verizon share price now. - watch it 14:30 Tues

another factor is Sterling strength. If for some reason our currency was strong it would in theory make the payout worth less. however this was always true as money came from usa earnings back here. Same applies to BP div etc
Vodafone only had one way to go and that was down
It depends on the frame. VOD was always strong underneath and to me the whole product they sell is strong, we all know mobile is a very popular and growing product so it snowballs into higher share price.

R4 is saying "£1/share" payout. nice one, i've got 2,900 in my ISA:)

Hate to be a debbie downer here but can international shares in Verizon fit into an ISA ?

    Important Notes
Although International Securities are permitted in an ISA, GBP sterling is the only currency permitted.

If the payout is 1 per share, i'll get my investment cost back.
  • Now that my initial euphoria is calming down a little, I'm begining to think about the implications. I hold my shares in a PEP, (I can't be doing with these new fangled ISAs :rotfl:). Would I be eligble to hold Verizon (foreign) shares in the aforementioned tax efficient vehicle ?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, because they are listed on a recognised stock exchange, namely the NYSE. However, you would have to check with your S&S ISA provider to ensure that they will allow dealings in the shares - should be easy enough to do as they would allow them (and other NYSE shares) to be held now, if this were the case.

[edit] If the ISA provider will not allow the shares to be held then they are likely to be sold in the market at prevailing prices and the proceeds allocated to your account instead

Going to be an awful lot of selling going on though when all these FTSE trackers and other UK-centric funds get given their shares....

Among the termination fees if the deal did not go through -

A $10bn penalty on Verizon should it fail to secure financing.

  • Just clocked this over on the Fool,

At Vodafone's request, Verizon has agreed to provide Vodafone shareholders holding fewer than 50,000 Vodafone shares with the means of realising the value of their Verizon shares at completion in a straightforward and cost-effective manner through a dealing facility. The availability of such facility will be subject to regulatory considerations, the requirements of the Listing Rules and other practicalities. In addition and subject to applicable securities laws, Verizon will make arrangements to provide shareholders with CREST Depositary Interests ("CDIs") and related facilities to allow settlement of trading in Verizon shares through CREST.
  • I was watching a video clip article on the BBC Business internet page and a shareholder says he will reinvest his dividend. He was on his computer and I assume it was his online account and he had 71,000 shares in VOD so he is in for a decent Windfall! Not sure which online broker he was using:

I was so so tempted to get VOD shares back in May but on here if you speak of shares you tend to get ---- oooooh too risky just stick to a cheap tracker or the Old Chestnut Vanguard Life Strategy.

Amazing love and blessings to all on here who have benefited from this VOD deal xx

indirectly good news for the govt if they want to get the privatisation of the royal mail off, now that the city/funds are flushed with cash.

Some had Vodafone and sold them - Star fund manager Neil Woodford cashed out of Vodafone shares earlier this year: http://citywire.co.uk/money/woodford-drops-vodafone-from-12bn-high-income-fund/a657537

On a plus note for you I think they may have fixed that broken propeller with Easyjet, see they are back over £13 (2 broker upgrades yesterday £16+) this morning :)

edit: Sorry jinx over here spoke too soon :o
EZJ back under the £13 mark although another broker upgrade today -
EasyJet: Morgan Stanley increases target price from 1420p to 1800p keeping an overweight rating
