I have recently been reporting a local trader who has been posting glowing 5 star reviews about their own property. All have been removed. Tripadvisor reviews can not always be believed. However, if a reviewer has a balanced review then it's probably true that they are a real customer. You need to read between the words and look at other reviews by the same reviewer.

Sorry what do you mean by " post a link to the tripadvisor page for the hotel" ???

I mean go to the page on tripadvisor that shows the reviews for the hotel then copy and paste the link (from the address bar at the top of the page) into a post on here so we can have a look.

Or just tell us the name and location of the hotel so we can find it?

Virtually everything that can be reviewed on the Internet has at least one bad review and the more popular the website, the more common it is for more than one bad review but honestly if the hotel in question has 95% positive reviews then the negative reviews are relatively meaningless. There may be some weight to the complaint (although moaning about Germans and Russians just seems prejudiced) because unfortunately even the best of hotels will let a standard or two slip here and there but on the whole the vast majority are clearly happy with the hotel.

Your SIL has made basic mistakes

    1. Taking any notice of what a travel agent says - they are sales people, you don't go to them for reviews! I've read so many tales of people booking hols going home & reading bad reviews, I've actually read some where people have printed out the reviews & managed to get their booking changed but you could be in for a fight to do this.

    2. Reading trip advisor after booking!

    3. Not reading the reviews with common sense and reading too much into a couple of bad things if 95% are ok. Delays if caused by flights have nothing to do with the hotel. Normally complaints about Germans & Russians tend to revolve around them reserving sun beds & not queuing at food buffets, or the entertainment being in german and russian, if you don't want this on your holiday then read the review before you book & don't book it!

I always use trip advisor & don't ever book a hotel without using first,

However I've seen complaints like ' this hotel had no US plug sockets' - hotel was not in America!! That I can choose to ignore! Or ones like 'this place was like an asylum seekers prison'. That I take note of! You look at who is writing the review and are their complaints valid.
  • With trip advisor I look at the majority of comments to give a good indication. I feel some people are never happy and will leave a bad comment. At one hotel I stayed at someone only gave one star because the water was slow in going down when emptying the sink!! Read them all then make a decision.

    That's where the OP's sister-in-law went wrong.

She made the decision then read the reviews - and is wavering about what sounds like a good hotel with 95% excellent reviews because of a few adverse comments that are (1) nothing to do with the hotel (flight delays) and (2) unlikely to be confined to that specific hotel (Russian & German guests).

The tripadvisor review system is flawed but a lot of people use it.

I personally don't like it and having read reviews I no longer use it.

For those that do there is a lot of reading between the lines to be done.

Ignore the 5* reviews and ignore the 1* reviews.

sister in law said the reviews states " lot of germans and russians" . No english on the t.v. Who goes on holiday to watch t.v. I say.... Someone else mentioned they had a 4 hour delay there and 2 hour delay coming back. That is something you really don,t want to read and they haven,t even gone yet.

Pool, accomodation and location was all great.

I sometimes think people will have a winge as they have nothing else to winge about.

I'm sorry if it's taken out of context but I find that offensive and I'm neither German or Russian. Why on earth is your SIL going abroad if she doesn't want to mix with 'foreign' people?

She sounds as if she's rather naïve and a worrier. If she wants to miss out on her holiday for those sorts of reasons or a delay which is totally luck of the draw then I would just let her get on with it. There is certainly a need to read the reviews carefully. I saw a bad review for a hotel in central Madrid. When I looked carefully it was because of poor air con in August. I was going in November and the hotel was great.

Quite frankly I don't think I would have the patience for your SIL.
She is acting like a child and trying to find mistakes with the place. 95% positive reviews is excellent scoring. She sounds like a little spoiled brat to be honest. Are you sure she wants to even go on a holidays?? Isn't she finding excuses to cancel?? Because anyone with a bit of a brain would recognise that
a/ take reviews with a pinch of salt
b/ some people just write when they have something to complain about
c/ 95% is excellent scoring considering the above!!
And what does the hotel have to do with some travellers delays????

I use tripadvisor all the time and also post reviews. I often look where the review poster is from and look at other reviews by the person - some nationalities have different standards and some people are just plain thick. Like when people complain there was no american style food in Cuba... seriously?? How thick are they??

Let her do her moan but rise above it.
On the other hands - the lesser she expects, the more she will enjoy the holidays as it will exceed her expectations.
