They know how much debt he is in and probably the 'difficult situation' legally he would find himself in if he either returned to the UK or made his whereabouts known. i'll just say unpaid fines...

If he is a nurse, and likely to be working as a nurse then I would check with the nursing licensing bodies in the US. They probably won't give you contact details but they may agree to pass on a message.

For instance: http://www.enursescribe.com/org3.htm has a list of state nursing boards. I've only looked at the Alabama Board of Nursing, but that has a license look up facility and I would assume the others do too.
That way you can find out what state he's in.

From that you could possibly narrow down the search for a marriage license, check the phone book, that sort of thing.

Sarah I have been in a similar situation. Ex disappeared leaving bucketloads of debt that I paid off. Judge awarded me the house and signed the transfer on ex's behalf. I was ordered to 'use my best endeavours' to remove ex from terms of mortgage but wasn't able to do this until I earned enough to get a mortgage of my own and despite paying the flaimin' thing, I didn't earn enough to take it on! Ex went to UAE and couldn't be traced.

Eventually my pay went up and I was able to write the Building Society and the court who agreed that I could remove his name from the mortgage. The house was already in my name by that time. It was a pain but not insurmountable.
