Update on this again, I bit the bullet and phoned the ex's ex, mother of his other child. Phone number was dead.
    Phoned his mother, same thing.
Now what? Looked on facebook, myspace no joy there. How do I know if he is dead? WHere in the uk do they keep a record of deaths of uk nationals oversesas?
He was a state registered nurse, does he still have to present his registration documents overseas, as I know his reg. number.

what about 192.com for an address of his mum/ex, that you could write to? My husband has a years subscription to ancestry.com, can't remember what year it goes up to- possibly 2005. What was the last time you were aware that he was alive? If you happy to PM me your exes name I can see if a death has been registered in this country. ancestry also gives info for other countries including states, but I would imagine I would need to know which state he was living in.

He was around in Feb of this year, in Michigan. His fatrer died in Jan. but it doesn't even look like he came over for the funeral.

Not sure if this helps but here goes. If he's registered and keeps his registration up do date he'll have a pin number. Some countries may need it before allowing him to work as a qualified nurse, others may not.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I thought I would add this in case it helps anyone, please hope I am not the only one in this situation! Hubby suggested I search the probate register as the ex's father died in Jan. and he was the sort of organised chap who would have had a will and he had a house which would have needed to be transferred to someone, prob. the ex.
I think I know where his nursing reg. documents are off to have a look now although I am tempted ...ironically...to watch casualty.

Had an email today from the british consulate in the US.
They are looking for him!!! I cannot believe it. Maybe we will get somewhere. Until we find the (alleged) B*stard we are stuck with the mortgage we have currently because of the charge on the property unless I can prove he is either missing or uncontactable.
