Yes, you need to reboot after removing NET Framework 4 Client Profile. The updates for Net Framework 3.5 should be fine. But I have noticed that a recent update from Windows Updates is causing problems for some computers.

    Hi NiftyDigits,
Just thought I'd update you, I'm still unable to install updates so I have since posted a request for help to the Microsoft Community website in desperation.
Someone there is responding and asking me numerous questions about what and when I have installed (updates and different softwares etc) so hopefully they will get to the bottom of it? I'll post the outcome in due course.
    Cheers for now

Will run a few diagnostics myself when I have the inclination. On one machine, the latest security update simply hangs and on another Windows Updates fails unless NET Framework 4 Client Profile is removed.

    re. NET Framework 4,
Last month I reinstalled XP Pro for someone.
    I added all the updates.
I then installed their Office 2003, no Office updates appeared, it wouldn't connect to MS Update.

After some Googling, I un-installed NET Framework 4, rebooted and all the expected Office updates appeared.

ETA, I've done plenty of installs, but I've never had the trouble that I've had this weekend trying to get a new install to update. It was either 'there is a problem connecting' or the blue dots just kept going. (Even left it an hour). Eventually got it sorted Tuesday lunch time.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Ok, here's what appears to be the final outcome of my enquiry on the Microsoft Community Website/forum:

Firstly, part of my last response on the forum confirming my current Windows Update status:
"I now have '22 Important' Updates queued ready to install. I tried to install KB2859537 separately (It was unchecked) without success (Same error code as usual)"

Final response given by the MS MVP (Whatever that is?) :

Here's a dirty little (not so) secret: So many Win7 users encountered problems (i.e., "Blue Screens of Death" AKA BSODs) after installing KB2859537 that Microsoft "throttled" the update (which is why it was an unchecked update in your scan result).

Translation: Last I heard, KB2859537 isn't being offered/installed via Automatic Updates (to Win7 computers).

So if MS is "throttling" it - which suggests that MS will be re-releasing KB2859537 (i.e., KB2859537-V2) in the near future, how much time & effort should we devote to getting it installed now?

Note: According to your previous replies, chances are the other 21 of those "Important" updates are Optional, non-security updates (yes, even though they're Important updates). Assuming you can confirm my supposition, feel free to hide each of the non-security updates.

Assuming (a) the computer is NOT infected and (b) CCleaner's Registry Cleaner did NOT cause the behavior, it may be best to wait & see if all of the September security updates successfully install (after they're released on the 10th).

    Otherwise...
OPTION A: For home users, no-charge support for security updates (only!) is available by calling 800-MICROSOFT (800-642-7676) in the US or 877-568-2495 in Canada. [1]

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary [i.e., in other regions] for support issues relating to security updates (only!), visit the following Microsoft International Support website:http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=4

OPTION B: You may obtain Microsoft-sponsored Premium (i.e., paid) Support via the Answer Desk => http://answerdesk.microsoftstore.com [2]

Not totally sure what to make of that after all the information I had given on request? I was hoping there would be an actual solution given. Anyone else aware of this particular Update issue I wonder? :(
  • I've recently reinstalled win7 on my acer aspire 5738 (systeminfo at the cmd prompt says it was 28/7/2013) and KB2859537 is in the list of 150 installed hotfixes.... so it does work on at least one pc.

Regarding concern about overheating I found CPUID HWMonitor useful. (downloaded from the people that make it).

That being said, my laptop still has a few peculiarities, one being that a user account will sometimes not see a website an admin account can - gmail, being one example.... weird.
