    Hi NiftyDigits,

    Many thanks for your response.

Yes, I have Windows7 with Service Pack 1. I have searched but can't find NET Framewrok 4 Client Profile anywhere?

Where would be the best source for an up to date, certified clean disc?

    Cheers

If it's there it would be under Programs via the Control Panel.

Windows 7 SP1 (media refresh) images are here

Is this a brand name PC or Custom made?

Do you have a valid Product Key?

    Hi NiftyDigits,

I located the Net Framework file where you suggested and removed it completely, did a reboot and it looks like updates are now installing OK :j. One must have gone thru on reboot which left 6 to install. One failed but I rebooted again, saw there were then four updates but this time they all installed successfully!

    So many thanks for that!!

Should I look at cleaning up the Catroot files I mentioned earlier or should I just leave things as they are?

I bought the PC from Arbico computers but I guess it might be considered a custom built PC as I could add or upgrade different parts at the time?
I do have a valid product key and Windows 7 disc.

Not such goods news this time, I uploaded the ASUS updates (SATA and Chip Set) and upon a manual reboot, saw yet another Windows update attempting to install. It took quite an age before the PC turned off before I rebooted only then to be confronted by the dread BLUE SCREEN .
I did a forced reboot (As it was the first time I had seen this since installing the new HD) and then did a repair via the BLACK SCREEN I clicked restore when asked and then it continued to do the repair process.
Thankfully I was able to get back into PC but looks like it didn't like the ASUS updates as that was the last action taken?

Should I look at undoing those to be safe if that's possible?
    :(

Yes, get rid of those Driver Updates.

Don't know the Catroot folder had any bearing on the problem. Just found that NET Framework 4 Client Profile has been causing problems with Windows Updates.

You should download the latest disc from my link, burn it to DVD using the Windows 7 Image Burner and keep it to hand.

Back up, run a clean install with the new Windows 7 disc, restore your data and then use Macrium Refect to image your drive.
You can do that in a day, rather than spending days trying to pinpoint the problem.

Before you take the leap, you can use a Live CD/DVD such as the Try Ubuntu option of Ubuntu to check for hardware problems and to get access to your data if necessary.

can you get into RECOVERY mode?

    If yes then run
    sfc /scannow

that should repair any damaged system files and allow you to boot.

No can't get in any which way, completely stuffed by the looks of things.
NiftyD, how can I do backup if I can't get in? Also when you say 'New' Windows disk is that the one I have on hand? Also please clarify Macrium Refect and Try Ubuntu as never heard of these things :(
    Thanks
