PC Issues (Continued)

Hi,

Further to an earlier thread of mine (PC Under Attack) and following the installation of a replacement Hard Drive I continue to have one or two glitches with my PC which I have been trying to resolve without success:
a) PC still turns itself off if left unattended roughly after about an hour or so (Seems to go into sleep mode first though)? It was suggested earlier that it might be a component overheating but I wonder if there is a default setting (energy saving?) that might be the cause? It will even force a close down when something is left open yet it doesn’t close down when it’s actually being used for long periods? If it was overheating why wouldn’t it closedown when it is being used? It’s not a major issue but it just doesn’t seem right to have to select ‘Start in Normal Mode’ on the black screen on the occasions it’s presumably forced a close down?
I confirm this only started happening after installing new HD and reinstalling Windows etc.

b) I have recently realised that PC is unable to install Window updates and found error code 8E5E03FA to be the initial culprit so I did asearch and found what I hoped to be the solution:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/b6ee93a6-4629-4605-9b76-6e48397c37a0/8e5e03fa-fix
I did everything as listed (although had to go direct to Windows file at one point presumably because I have Windows 7?) but got stuck when it came to deleting the files in catroot2 as it said about three of them were in use somewhere else? I also couldn’t rename catroot 2 to catroot3 presumably for the same reason?

I made a second attempt to change the catroot folder based on a slightly different route which appears to of added a catroot3 folder whilst leaving catroot2 in place but the net result is the same – I still can’tinstall updates? Instead I now see a different error code = 800706B5 but I can't find any solutions for this one?
Once again, I’m hoping a kind MSE Techie Expert can help and/or advise on one or both of the above issues? :)

PC is just over two years old but recently installed replacement Hard Drive as mentioned.
Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium

Windows 7 with Service Pack 1?

Check if NET Framework 4 Client Profile is installed. If it is, remove it and reboot.

Otherwise think about backing up and reinstalling with an up to date, certified clean disc.

Start Menu; type in Power Options (look for the result under settings)
    OR
Go to control panel, in the search bar type in Power options, select change power saving settings

    BOTH
Click Choose when the computer sleeps on the left hand.

Then see what it says about Put the computer to sleep. Select an appropriate time.

There is also a hybrid sleep setting that is available through the advanced one, then expanding sleep

This might solve the sleep/turn off problems. But worth a check to make sure that it's either set to not do so, or jiggle with settings and see if it turns off before the settings, thus ruling those out

What happens when you manually put the PC to sleep?
    Does the same thing happen?

make sure you have the latest drivers forthe graphics card and Motherboard

Don't rely on windows generic drivers. Go to the Motherboard makers web site and get the latest drivers.

The 3 main causes of crashing while in sleep mode I've came across are:
    Graphic driver problems.
    Motherboard/ Device driver problems
And Heat-sink not fitted correctly! (Too much or too little thermal paste used or cheap thermal pad).

The drivers are the easy thing to check first ^_^

    Hi NiftyDigits,

    Many thanks for your response.

Yes, I have Windows7 with Service Pack 1. I have searched but can't find NET Framewrok 4 Client Profile anywhere?

Where would be the best source for an up to date, certified clean disc?

    Cheers

Thanks for this Lifeforms, I did go into this area yesterday and extended the sleep time period. There doesn't seem to be anything about shutting down PC completely so assumed this wouldn't stop that from happening?

Thanks for this SOlitaire, I confirm the thermal paste is a bit thin having looked at the Heat Sink previously so this could be an issue perhaps but in the meantime, I'm looking into the drivers via ASUS website re my Motherboard (P8H61-M LE/USB3) but I'm a bit unsure what to do once I get to the flwg list:
    Qualified Vendor (5)
    BIOS (15)
    Bios Utilities (5)
    Chipset (3)
    Audio (2)
    VGA (4)
    LAN (3)
    Utilities (10)
    SATA (1)
    Manual (6)

Any advice on this would be further appreciated :)

    Cheers

    Hi SOlitaire,

Just to confirm I put PC into sleep mode a good hour and a half ago and it didn't close down completely - does that indicate anything?

    Morning/Afternoon >_< *yawn*

ok the 2 main updates you need to update are:
"SATA and "Chipset" (Use the latest drivers listed)
That should take care of most problems without too much hassle!

I'd hold of on others at the moment and see how it runs after a reboot.

I got a sneaking suspicion that you might need to check what BIOS version you have.

Updating a BIOS is a last resort but you might want to look at the updates and see if anything in the fixes has been happening to you.

PC's not going to sleep usually means their is something stopping it. Could be a program (virus scan or backup running in the background stopping sleep mode!) OR driver issue!

    Many thanks SOlataire!

I'll look at these updates later, presumably I download all of those listed under each (SATA & Chipset) ?

Re Sleep Mode, it does go into sleep mode on it's own accord (Never used to before changed HD etc) but then switches off at some point a bit later.
I can put into sleep mode manually and it didn't switch off completely after and hour and a half so wondered if this meant anything such as over riding a default setting or something?

Yup just install the latest under those 2 headings and see what happens. ^_^

I always put my machine to sleep manually (got power saving settings turned off by default.) it can take 10 -20 seconds for it to write everything to RAM and go into a low state mode.

    *Lightbulb!*

    Just thought of something!

It might be the fans are not going into sleep mode (so It sounds like the PC is still running when it's just the fans turning).

Since you replaced the HDD you might have moved a few connections to get into the thing!

Double check the motherboard manual and make sure you have the fans connected to the correct power points on the motherboard. Their might be some that the motherboard can't control properly.
