Having worked for the passport office I would never waste my money on check and send. The number of applications we received from the post office that were missing items or incorrectly filled out was unbelievable. Like others have said, if you read the instructions carefully there's no reason why you would need to pay someone else to check it for you.
Absolutely and you can pay for special delivery to safeguard documents.
I recently applied for a renewal and the form was a doddle. I sent special delivery and the service was brilliant, I got the new passport within a week.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Any more posts you want to make on something you obviously know very little about?"
Is an actual reaction to my posts, so please don't rely on anything I say.0 -
I still use Check and Send - it's a convenient way to pay for the passport for one thing, and only costs £2.53 when you consider that the cost of Special Delivery is included in the price. Personally I wouldn't be happy sending supporting documents such as a valid and uncancelled passport in normal post.
Convenient...how is it any more convenient than paying to send it yourself.
This is a Moneysaving site so why advocate spending £2.53 over and above the special delivery rate which I agree is prob worth paying for.
As for your sig being outside the box, that is something that is quite clear in the instructions that it has to be inside the box.0 -

I meant that paying the £73 (or thereabouts) passport fee by cash or chip & PIN at a PO counter is more convenient than writing a cheque or filling out the card payment form.
The person who checked my application was very careful about it and consulted her supervisor on a couple of points that she wasn't sure about.
I didn't mind paying £2.53 for those two services. However, if you prefer to save your £2.53, by all means go for it. I'm just stating my opinion, not instructing everyone else to do likewise.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

If u use check and send does it mean that docs like birth certificate dont need to be sent off? Or do they still get sent off?
Wife cant remember. So either passport office havent sent it back or shes left it at po....0 -
Because a huge number of people are lazy and/or wont take responsibility for themselves.
I am not convinced it is pure laziness. The post office make a fairly big song and dance about the service and are not at all open about the fact there is no warranty attached to their checking.
On the surface of it £2.50 (or whatever it works out to be) is a reasonable price to guarantee the application is correct but the problem is that there is no guarantee and so its just a cash cow ready for the milking.0 -

The check and send dont make certified copies of anything, all the normal docs need to be sent irrespective of your method of postage.0 -

thankyou for neatly reinforcing my point.
A lot of people are too lazy to check what they get for 'check and send' and just go by what they hear 'on the surface'.
(think you may have meant 'on the face of it' but that's another topic...)The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
I recently had a passport done for our baby son - took him to a professional photographer where they put him in a special baby seat and took as many photos as they needed to until they got it right. At one point he was smiling in the photos and they said it won't do as they might get rejected by the passport office. Eventually they managed to get a pic of him looking all serious with eyes open. It only cost £8 for 6 pics and had no problems with the passport.0

I was so pleased with myself recently with mine and husband's renewals, tried to save as much as I could. Filled in renewal forms online then took the photos ourselves against cream wall indoors until we were happy with them, took phone to Boots and Bluetoothed for instant 9 small prints, cost, 39p. Sent both forms, old passports and photos back in one envelope, special delivery, passports back within a week. Remainder of photos used for driving licence renewals which were both due. Result! The important things in life are not things ........0

You can't e-mail a photo to the passport office - it must be a printed photo.0
