Passport photo rejected even after using check and send!

Not happy. Trying to get passport for 10 week old daughter.

As you can imagine, its not the easiest getting photo done. So, we used post office check and send service and said photo was ok. Phew!

Oh no. Passport office have now rejected it. What exactly is the point of check and send then!!!!!!!!

On holidays in 3 weeks. Is there any way to pay for premium to speed up an application in progress?

Check and send provide no warranty on the checking element and really is just a cash cow for the post office. You can use the complaint form http://www.postoffice.co.uk/contact-us-complaint and probably get the fee back but dont expect much more.

You can use the Fast Track service for a childs first passport for £87 which will get it to you within 1 week of the application being accepted. See https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently
  • We used fast-track for our 18 month old son (I went to the london office).. They were a bit concerned about the photo.. i had to chat to the for a while until they accepted it. They then turned the passport around in 3 days

Beware - it can take a week to get an appointment BUT you can phone up every day and ask about cancellations

Be really careful about shadows on the photo. We used Costco's passport service, but since there was some slight shadowing, it almost got rejected.

Yep they will refund but thats not the point. I paid for it to be sure it would be accepted.

Yep. Won't bother next time. If they aren't trained to accept/reject applications correctly I don't see they add any value.

You can't use the 1 day service since it's an infant's first passport, and you can only use the Fast-track. If the photo fails the fast-track, i believe you just need to return and show a new picture, but don't have to pay the £87 again.

Just read the criteria yourself and be really, really, anally retentive about it. https://www.gov.uk/photos-for-passports

When we did our daughters, we put her in her car seat, with a white sheet behind her head and pinned to the wall, then my wife was making loud noises to try to startle her so we had a photo of her with her eyes open, eyes were open but her arms were in most of the photos so we swaddled her and that did the trick. She looks possessed, but the photo was accepted okay.

Failed because there was a tiny bit of mother hand in the photo - holding baby up for photo.

Woman in post office said that was fine. Really annoyed.

    Photoshop?
  • Op, give the passport office a call, it may not such a disaster, it may just be a case of getting a new photo to them ASAP and they'll process the application, we had a problem with the form for our daughters passport renewal, even after using check and send, her new passport arrived less than a week after sending the amended form.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
