  • As a slight aside .. I worked at weekends and holidays in a pharmacy when I was at school. When they brought in the new rules including having to ask specific questions when selling particular drugs it was a nightmare. People in general were very rude epically as I was a 17 years old asking them but it was more to do with ensuring peoples safety. I don't think people notice now when those questions are asked its just second nature maybe we need to get used to GPs being more questioning ... Having said that I did have 1 gp who asked if I tried taking paracetomal for the pain when I was taking a cocktail of drugs including morphine prescribed by the pain clinic, funnily enough I never went back to see him again.

I am always astounded at how little the general public know or WANT to know about medication, people are always amazed at how much I know. I can't understand this as the main info is readily available, BUT the vast majority of people prefer to be ignorant on the subject and then moan about side effects and the like....... and say they won't take any meds !!!!!!

I can remember going to the Doctor many years ago for sick notes and they'd ask you lots of questions then to establish how ill you were and how capable you'd be in your job.

    Seems normal procedure to me.

Same would apply whether you were getting the sick note for your employer or for the Benefits Office.

I don't understand why you'd be aggrieved OP, nor why you'd be angry with other posters views. How do you think the system should operate?

one thing this has given me is anger, which is a powerful force, dont worry peeps, it will be channeled by words

frustration can make one act out in strange ways. Just keep reminding yourself that they have to cater for the lowest common denominator.....

Just picking up on how the Benefits people treat you.

I made one phone call to find out what benefits I was entitled to and was so appalled by the way I was spoken to I decided I wouldn't bother claiming.

I knew I couldn't cope with being treated like a criminal and saved myself the trauma that you are obviously experiencing now.

I guess you have to develop a thick skin and learn how to navigate the system from a pro.

Trouble is, those that work assume everyone on benefits is a scrounger with a flat screen tv etc.
Being on benefits is a proper shock to someone that has worked before and sadly the way you are treated is just how the system works.
Its only then that you realise that stuff isn't handed to you on a plate as easily as you thought.

    Good luck ;)

i went to the doctor to ask for a sick note as i was advised to do this to support a claim for esa

he asked me a lot of questions re my recent work history, what benefits i was on etc

on reflection it sounded like i was being `screened` as a potential `work shirker`

my question is this, is this normal practice now?
what should i do to convince him i am not a `shirker`

btw if anyone doubts, i have 30 years solid work experience behind me and it disgusts me that after having paid all these ni contributions i should be screened like this

How dare the doctor do his job thoroughly, how dare he want to make sure that he is not signing a sick-note for someone who is capable of working. I think that you should just be able to phone up for a sick note for how ever long you want it and it just be sent in the post.

Bet you are one of those who moans if he cant get to see his doctor when he wants as well.

OP had you been to this GP recently? It may be why you had to be asked lots of questions.
I recently requested a sick note over the phone from my GP who agreed so fast the call was over in 30 seconds. But I had had two recent in depth consultations and he'd just done three separate referrals for me. He didn't need to ask me anything because he already had the full picture. Might this be the opposite case for you? In which case he was doing his job.
I was of course willing to be satisfied with whatever time he gave me on the note although I was hoping for 1 month, he signed it for 3.

since i have been on benefits - only six weeks - i have been treated like scum

thank you for the minority on here that have been supportive, the rest of you can f o.

Believe it or not there are lots of collusive GPs and fit people claiming to be sick when they aren't. As you hope to be in receipt of tax payers cash I would hope there are strict checks and measures in place to weed out the shirkers and ensure the genuinely sick and ill are helped.

Gone are the days when public cash was just dolled out with hardly any audit on the validity of the claimants.

What do you want? Cash just handed to you? No checks whatsoever?
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

i guess i havent adjusted yet to being treated with respect to being treated with suspision
What exactly makes you think that you always get treated with respect in some workplaces?.

There are some decent bosses around, but then there are the silver spoon ones who inherited the position when Daddy retired and don't have a clue how to deal with staff or customers and are gradually losing both.........

You don't have to be entering the benefits system to be shat upon or treated unfairly or dis-respectfully, it happens in the work place too.
