I really believe that if we hadn't introduced NMW that more people would be better of today than now.
The problem now is that increasing wages to a 'living' wage is impractical and is to quick an adjustment for companies and the economy to cope with and all that will happen is cost of living will just rise so we end up back where we are now.
There is no easy way out of this now though, you could remove NMW and I would expect an immediate dip in average wage but then it to rise at a quicker rate than keeping NMW...but thats just a guess.
Yeah it sure would suck if the chairman had to give up his super yacht so the plebs could be paid a living wage wouldn't it?0 -

That's fascinating, can you share with us how you allocated your monthly budget? Maybe Rowntree is wrong and we really can live a life of luxury on NMW?
Who said luxury, some people just choose not to waste their money on things they don't need, but instead make the most of what they have to make it work for them instead of complaining.0 -

What about the things people do need? Housing, food, warmth etc?
I would say it's impossible to provide even the essentials on NMW and that's backed up by published research.
I'm genuinely interested to see a household budget based on the chief income earner being on NMW where the basics are provided let alone also saving for a deposit on a house.0 -

Don't you realise how bad it is to find a decent, well paying job at the moment.
Your humour is disrespecting 1000's of people.
You must be rich and I hope you sleep well.0 -

Impossible, what a load of rubbish, backed up by what, people who can't live without sky tv, holidays abroad and new cars every few years!0 -

Sorry, my response was a bit tongue in cheek but I would say in all seriousness it is perfectly possible to have a minimum wage set at living wage level. Not only possible but also a moral duty for politicians and employers to achieve this.0 -

I'm far from rich. I earn well below average UK salary.
However I do sleep very well because I actually take a stand and argue for a decent wage for all and full employment, even though it's an extremely unfashionable argument in this day and age where the government and a significant proportion of the population share your view that we all deserve to live in poverty and be grateful if we can get any work at all.0 -

Not in a capitalist world though I'm afraid!
The government should encourage companies to pay a living wage in return for a tax break on corporate tax IMO. Without doing the figures I would expect the government to then gain alot of this break back in terms of VAT etc.
No doubt its not workable for some reason but its an idea.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0
