I thought it was legit as it was advertised in the job centre. More fool me :) I didn't realise they let just anybody stick up an ad there.

I understand how you would have thought that. The Job Centre couldn't have checked thoroughly.

Did you ask the Job Centre for the woman's address. They must have had it.

Also worth reporting what happened to The Job Centre so they don't let it happen to anyone else. Maybe you could ask whether they could get your money for you? Given their involvement.

Don't worry I wouldn't be surprised if they told you they couldn't get involved.

I did. I went in and complained. It got me nowhere. They all kept saying they needed the job reference number that the job was advertised under. As I didn't have that any more, so there was nothing that could be done. I explained the situation that it left me in, but it made no difference to them. I don't know, maybe they just couldn't be bothered.

When did you drop out of Uni?
What degree are you studying for now?
Have you ever had a job which paid a wage, not just commission?
Volunteer for something, anything, if you're any good the organisation will give you a glowing reference.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

But I'd have difficulty getting a reference for that if I mention that. They have area leaders and team leaders, but they do it all online/mobile phone.

Just give the Head Office HR address and they'll confirm the dates you worked for them. Maybe phone HR first to warn them you'll be requiring a reference and ask the name of the person you should put down. Set it up so it's straightforward for the prospective employer.

Don't forget your university could give a reference as could your Dad or his social/ health worker.

I never thought employers took caring duties seriously. In saying that, I probably don't have a high opinion of caring duties myself, I just get on with it and don't see it as any sort of skills.

I think employers will take caring duties seriously as you have to work with minimal supervision, be diligent and take serious responsibility. All talents an employer values.

Exactly! So that's why I never mention caring duties. Its a progressive illness and will only get worse. If they find out the name of my dad's illness, they will know that too. And I don't like to mention it because it makes me want to cry. Such suffering he has ahead. I couldn't possibly mention it in an interview without getting upset and messing up the whole thing.

An employer will learn about your dad's illness sooner or later so you might as well be up front about it. Its there. It won't go away. The employer actually has a right to know as it may affect your attendance. Be practical about it with them. Be straightforward about how long you will be able to work full time until you will be needed at home again. If we are talking years away, that won't phase them.

Remember lots of employees have home situations to deal with but they still do a good job at work and keep their home worries out of the workplace. You just need to show the employer you understand that and can do it.

It won't help to cry at the interview. Crying is for home, not work. As you are depressed you have less control over the crying when you talk about your dear dad. So practice talking and hold in the crying.
If you can't then warn the interviewer beforehand that you are likely to cry if you talk about your dad so please bear with you. If you start to well up then take a tissue out and ask the interviewer to give you a moment. Compose yourself. They will be understanding if they are any good at their job.

Can you get some counselling and practice interview sessions from the job centre so you can specifically practice how you explain about your Dad in a professional way?

Failure, I'm trying to focus on practical suggestions that will really help you get a job. Please don't think I'm being heartless. My heart weeps for your sad situation. (hug)

Lying on your CV and attaining a job is fraud, people have gone to prison for it.

Sadly it doesn't surprise me they couldn't be bothered. I'm sure they must have had a record under the company name or woman's name or phone number. But it would have taken a bit of effort.

Ah well. Put that down to bitter experience and move on.

Dont worry about the odd blag. I would say that over 80% of people on here AND in companies have blagged their way into a place of reward. Desperate time calls for desperate measures but dont make it so blatantly obvious. Just keep it simple and its all good in the hood.

I've blagged my way into many senior positions and you know what happened in the end? I left for reasons that had nothing to do with my ability.

Sure theres an element of dishonesty in how you GOT the role but if you can do it, and do it well, then I don't see the problem. At the end of the day, the company was looking for someone to do something and as long as you can do it then !!!!!! the fancy paperwork and credentials. Just get in and get your head down. Tip - as you get into these positions and stay there for a while, you're future CVs will need less blags for further roles.
  • I only managed to get back into full time work after redundancy by bending the truth on my CV... I turned a couple of 1-2 week temp jobs into 3 month contracts, one of my jobs used a bespoke payment finance system which became Sage on my CV, basic excel became proficient with Pivot tables/vlookups, etc.

I wouldn't go as far as that, though I suppose your bespoke finance system must have been similar to sage - maybe they're all similar?

Get shot of the 2 fake jobs & embellish the jobs you have done.
For Betterware, you can extol on the fact that you have 6 months experience in retail, including stock control & finance.

For the caring of your dad, you can embellish this as 'adult care worker'. They would not be able to question the integrity of these descriptions as they are true.
