We have all the money we will ever need but it was not always that way and i remember how hard it was and i will take up some of the slack for people i know who it would cause concern if they had to pay for things..

We go on holiday with a fantastic family and he is a great mate,Ten years ago they had a very comfortable living in a 7 bedroom house but a fire at the business wiped him out with no insurance..Ending with bankruptcy.
They now rent a three bed house and he is on the taxis.
We go out for meals now and i take up the slack because on many a occasion when they had the money they treated us on numerous occasions..That is how it should be.
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
  • I am very open about my debt. Although classed as "good debt" I don't want to have ANY. I have plans in my head that I want for my life which include a few months in Thailand followed by a year in Australia. Getting rid of debt its paramount in my life and I don't care who knows it. I am picking up a few debt busting friends along the way. They confess to me when they have spent something or excitedly tell me when they have paid something off.

I say tell everyone, if your OH is embarassed tell him to get moving and help you pay it off faster.. how is he helping you by the way???

I don't personally care what other people think - that's my problem. I live for me and not the impression others may have of me. I will not buy something for someone else (takeaway) that I haven't bought for myself in over 3 years..

Tell your OH if he carries on like this he will forever remain embarassed cause the debt won't shift...

Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent".

Thanks for all of the replies :)

Very interesting to see other peoples views on being open & honest or feeling embarrassed.

We saw MIL yesterday and she was asking us to visit her in October, Huby wasn't in the room so I quite openly told her that we REALLY can't afford it - and was clear that it wasn't a throw away comment. She stopped in her tracks as it were - I didn't do it 'behind his back' with any malice - but I think having this information will make her mindful that we aren't 'not visiting' out of rudeness or a lack of wanting to - it's just circumstances don't allow money for flights and parking & kennel fee's at this time.

It won't be forever in 2 months we will have paid off a LARGE loan and this will allow more disposable income so we could plan a trip next summer and we can put it behind us.
