• Hi Skinny, always good to catch up on your posts. I'm constantly updating my household spreadsheet counting down each mortgage overpayment. I noticed the last few of your messages related to pensions etc. of which I too have minimal knowledge and understanding of (although we do each have one) and wondered if my recent success might be of help to you. I'm not an advocate for PPI claims (unless of course they are legit) but just wanted to say that recently we sent a letter to our old endowment company as we felt that our original mortgage endowments were unsuitable and missold. We surrendered these early after 10 years back in 2002! No fuss, no phone calls etc and they offered us £7200 in compensation! (Which we have used to overpay to our mortgage) I have put a post on the mainsite, forums, essential money, mortgage & endowments pages (sorry page wont allow me to post the link) to help others that might be interested, but I know that lots of us like minded mortgage overpayers read your posts so thought it might be ok to share this here too. Most people like me thought these claims had been time barred but we're proof that they havent. Hope thats ok. Looking forward to your next update.

Hey thanks for your input, I had 1 successful PPI claim, I think it was £65! The other I told I was not eligible but I could maybe try again after what you told me, I will keep you posted, thank you :)

• Hi Skinny, definately worth a try. I worked for a bank for more years than I care to remember but even I cant remember half of the credit cards, loans or insurances that I had in the past 25 years. But, I have been successful in helping friends and family making 'legitimate' claims for there mis sold insurances.
Until recently I didn't think that there had been anything in the past that I had taken that had PPI or that was unsuitable so hadn't claimed myself. But, out of curiosity I used one of Martins template letters for the DSAR (data subject access request) reports and wrote to my banks and asked for copies of all the info they held for me which included all previous account information. I found that I paid mortgage payment protection for over 8 years from the start of my mortgage. (I thought we had an insurance but didn't think we had paid it for that many years) It was a rubbish policy but as we were given a 100% interest only (endowment) mortgage we were told we had to have it. Obviously I now know that this was not the case. But, if you want you can look at my recent posts which explain that although I had a recollection of having this type of policy 23 years ago and decided to make a PPI claim against it, the bank stated 'in writing' that I had never had the policy with them so they were unable to consider my claim! If you read my update post you will see that I actually obtained archived mortgage statements (by using the DSAR letter) from the bank who said I never had the insurance. And sure enough, there was a monthly mortgage payment insurance premium taken with each of my mortgage payments. So lesson learned- even if the bank say you never had it and you think you did, send a DSAR letter. The cost is a one off £10 fee regardless of how much info they send to you.
So, I'm crossing my fingers that we may well be successful in proving this was missold too! In total we paid £2200 in premiums which would be another nice little lump sum to pay off of our mortgage should we win. So Skinny (and anyone else who mayb e reading this post), have a good think and maybe consider a DSAR letter to your bank to see exactly what you may have had in the past that you have forgotten about. Good luck.

• Hi, Im new to this forum so not sure how too!
• I have found an old loan, I will have a go at that, can you put a link to your post?

Hi Skinny, I have used this template letter for the Data Subject Access request letter . I originally found this letter template on the Money Saving Expert site some time ago and saved it to my PC. I used this recently and found an old mortgage income protection policy shown on some old mortgage statements I got as a result of sending this to my bank, so it was worth sending the letter and paying the £10 fee just to find this. Good luck with that old loan.

Please send me all data that your company holds relating to my/our account history. Please include details of all transactions, and a copy of the original contract by which all and any accounts were governed at the time it was opened including all amendments made to the contract terms since opening the account.
I would also like a schedule of all charges & interest applied to my account(s) including details of any instances that required manual intervention. If you are unable to provide this specific information, copy statements will suffice.

All data, including data held on a microfiche must be provided within a reasonable timescale, a maximum of 40 days.

In light of all the recent publicity regards the reclaiming of bank charges, some Banks appear to now only be providing a breakdown of charges in response to all and any Data requests. For the avoidance of doubt I do actually require all information held by yourselves.

It seems a lot of banks are also wrongly interpreting the Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998 as a requirement to only disclose six years worth of personal data, and this is also wholly wrong. The DPA clearly states that all information held must be disclosed and it has no correlation to the Limitation act 1980 at all. If you no longer hold data beyond 6 years however, I would like a signed declaration from your data controller and a copy of all documents pertaining to its proper disposal.

Whilst not exhaustive and for the avoidance of doubt I shall list what I require:

* Full copies of all contracts that exist between myself/ourselves your organisation; including copies of any documents you hold in support of same.

* Copies of all statements relating to the above accounts
* Copies of all correspondence, including all letters, faxes, emails and memos sent and received between ourselves, and any other third party in relation to any of the above accounts.
* Copies of any telephone recordings and/or transcripts of these recordings as well as any logs or journals that relate to them.

* Copies of all documents which include any of my personal information including copies of any contracts or invoices, emails or computer records containing my personal information, or any records which pertain to this information.

* Full details and copies of any documents upon which you relied when you have provided my personal or financial information to any individual, organisation or third party.

* Full copies or transcripts of any computer logs or database records kept in relation to myself or in relation to my financial or personal information.

*Details of all systems you currently have in place to ensure my personal or financial information is kept securely, including details of those officers who currently have control of same, and at the time it was held or provided to a third party.

* Where any previous information or records held have been deleted or disposed of, the methods used to do so, including dates, reason for deletion, certificates or references confirming details of destruction. Where you are unable to provide such certificates, please provide a declaration, signed by an authorised officer of your company, confirming the dates and methods of destruction of this data.

I enclose the maximum statutory fee of £10 in the form a cheque.

Yours faithfully

• Thank you for the above

Well it's been so long since I updated, where do I start?!

Yesterday I moved in with my friend, finally. I am very cosy in my room and can fit everything I need it. I gave her £40, for each week, she said she didn't want anything near that but I insisted, I think that's a very fair amount. I'm buying my own food, but nothing else (I've even got my own little fridge!!)

Ex has been offered a council house :j:j its not that cheap as it's sheltered housing so he has to pay for a warden even though he doesn't actually need one, but it's still cheaper than private, and secure. He will get the keys soon, but it needs some decorating first, they will give him some vouchers for that. So it's all moving in the right direction.

I have decided to spend money on upgrading the house, once I get my deposit back from the house I rented I will have enough for the kitchen. The living room, which needs completely gutting including plastering, I am going to fund with my new virgin money credit card  yes I'm going back into debt  But it is a planned debt and I think this is OK, I have a 0% offer on spending and cash transfers (fee is 1% on spending and 1.9% on transfers). I seem to be much better at paying down debt than I am at saving! So I will set my self a budget and a plan to pay it back before I do it.
The bathroom I will do if/when I get my bonus next spring.

DD is coming home next Saturday :T:T:j:j I am so exited to see her. She is having a short holiday in Amsterdam before coming home, it was actually cheaper to fly back via Amsterdam than direct. And amazingly she has not been going out much and has managed to save 300 euros for her holiday. Thats the first time shes actually saved for anything and she was delighted with herself, waving her wad of cash at me on messenger :rotfl:

DS started college and hated it, so he applied to do engineering instead, went for the interview, and came back having signed up for joinery and carpentry. He's still working for the builder/handyman on his days off. This week he was laying laminate floors. So delighted for him, he's really growing into a lovely young man with a good work ethic and direction in life.

In fact since I had my light bulb moment in 2013 life has improved in just so many ways, not just financial, but how I see my self too, and how that affects those around me. My kids are blossoming, and also I have made lovely new friends and developed better relationships with old friends. I have had some amazing times, and value what I have so much more, don't feel I need STUFF to feel good (although driving round in a new car does make me feel good, still have Ali to thank for that).
This money debt thing is not just about hard cash, there's some huge psychological stuff going on too, that I am not worthy to try and understand.
Thinking about it, early 2013 I had some therapy, about 6 sessions, to try and help and support me in trying to support DD with her mental health issues, although I couldn't see it at the time, the therapy I think has been tremendously helpful in many areas of my life, mmmm food for thought............

Glad you are 3/4 of the way to moving back into your own home:T

Although sheltered is more expensive than a normal flat/bungalow it normally includes heating/electric and in some places water so it actually works out cheaper in the long run.
Would your ex qualify for Housing Benefit to help with the rent?

Also glad to hear the therapy has been subconsciously working for you - can't wait to hear about more of the positive steps you have been taking:j
