Buying discounted car outright on motability?

I heard that it's possible to buy a new car discounted on motability.

Is this only after the three year lease period has expired or can you buy the car from new with a discount?

  • From what I can gather from a little googling - it simply is not worth buying from motorbility themselves. What may be better is to go to one of their car auctions and try to get hold of one that is up to 3 years old there although with the new PIP benefit coming in there may well be a huge surplus soon. Motorbility apparently charge a higher price than if you just go to the auction - so if the idea is to save money, then a car auction would be better. http://www.youreable.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1320.html

If it's the car you had, ask the dealer when you return it, that chain of getting the car detailed, then entered into the Auction. You can then follow it, bid for it before those garages do who then flog them on the guaranteed finance schemes get their paws on it.

I honestly don't know why people are still taking on new leases with Motability.

Either they know something that the rest of us don't know (change or relaxation of the criteria for PIP) or have more money than sense.

Surely a good quality 2nd hand car a year old financed on HP for say 3 years would be a better prospect. After three years of DLA payments the car is yours and you can then afford to loose the mobility element when PIP comes in.

Just sent back my Motability rented car early (after 18 months) and bought a very low mileage 5 year old Landrover Freelander from the LR main dealer. Monthly payments are the same as the DLA and it will be paid off by the end of 2015 when PIP starts.

Unfortunetly, some need adaptions to be fitted to their cars in order to drive them. Motability fits these for free in alot of cars. So for some, Motability is the only way they can get a car.

That's all well and good if you can afford it, but what about people who have problems getting credit ? Or those who would struggle to pay the Insurance, Tax, Maintenance etc which they would be responsible for if they owned the vehicle ?
Its amazing how these banks can't even do simple calculations correctly..............

That as it may be the case for some, but in my observations for every 10 Motability cars I see there may be one with some type of adaption.

Credit? you can get credit via HP from Motability if you want to. There are no checks made by them.

The only 'extras' would be maintenance and insurance - you don't pay road tax.

What are these 'extra' costs? maybe £600/£700 a year in total.

All you need do is to tailor the monthly HP payment to say £55 a month less than what HRM actually pays you. That way you have the money for the 'extras'.

DLA is £55.25 a week - £2873 a year, less say £600 for maintenance & insurance leaves you with £2273.

All you have to do is find a suitable car that would cost no more than £190 a month. My HP payments are £299 a month based on a car worth well in excess of £16,000. Using that as a yardstick you should be looking at a car worth just over £10,000.

At the end you have a car to use or sell/part exchange - what would you have with a Motability rental car?
