That as it may be the case for some, but in my observations for every 10 Motability cars I see there may be one with some type of adaption.
I drive with adaptions which cost £1,000. No way could I afford to pay for a car and adaptions as well.

There are charitable organisations that can help with the cost of the adaptions.

There are going to be some very sad stories that will come about when PIP goes live nationally in late 2015. Leasing a car under DLA regs will be a lot different than being awarded PIP and leasing a car - it will be a lot harder to get an award (the government have promised that) and the awards could well be for just a few years instead of the usual 'indefinite' awards under DLA.

Do people want to run the risk of not having a car come 2015?

The decision regarding the 20m consulation should be made in a couple of months. Motability are also due to announce plans to support people, for those who drop to standard rate from higher rate who lose it mid contract. What their plans are, I do not know, all I know is that they are finalising plans for PIP. I will await the outcome of these decisions, before deciding what I am going to do come 2015.

Maybe they will look kindly on those. But to be honest the best that they can come up with would be to offer to continue the lease with you having to top up the weekly payment to match the Enhanced Rate until the end of that current lease. After that they will not be able to offer a new lease to anybody that only has the standard rate for mobility awarded.
What would you suggest then when no new lease can be obtained?

A gamble that I would rather not take - I now have my own vehicle that is being paid for by my DLA and will keep it if and when I don't get the enhanced rate under PIP.
As I have said, there will be some very sad stories concerning those that aren't prepared to take action now to protect themselves.

I wouldn't have a problem in paying out to keeping the car for the duration on my next lease, then buying it off Motability at the end. At least this way, it will give some respite to people to plan for another car.

The consensus of opinion so far from what I have read is that buying your ex Motability car from Motability is not always the best way forward. Their values/prices are at the very top end of the market and there is no option to negotiate the price. If you want to go down that route you are best advised to buy it when it comes under the hammer at the auction.

The last few cars I've bought have been via the VAT-free route, but this is only of use if you're a wheelchair user, need the vehicle permanent adapted and you have the funds (or can get a personal loan).

I also got on a couple of cars (I get a better deal now) the Motability Discount, which was something like 8%-12% discount plus free Matalic Paint & Auto Gearbox.

I don't know if other dealership also offer the Motability Discount to new car buyers or if its been stopped (since it was 9yrs ago), but I was told that if you're entitled to a car via the Motability Scheme you're still entitled to the Discount when buying a new car outright (it just has to be on the Motability car list).

I went down that road a few months back to see what sort of discount I could get for a new Vauxhall. When I mentioned a discount (the same level of discount that is given to Motability) - the sales guy gave a sharp intake of breath and said 'no no no not possible - we don't make any profit with Motability sales'

The best that they could offer me was still more than what I could get the car for off the internet.

Walked across the road to another main dealer, looked at a Jaguar XF & a Landrover - 30 mins later, bought the latter.

Can I just add one little thing to the equation.

You sound like a confident person who can go in to a dealer and get exactly what you want, not many disabled people I know are that confident. A lot of them aren't even confident enough to tell their employer that they are disabled!
