They can fall asleep though! They cold read a book or use a handsfree kit. Bear in mind that, realistically, there's no need for them to use their hands so it makes no difference if they've got a bluetooth or whatever or use the handset.

It's about concentration when they are supposed to be supervising the learner.

You can't be over the limit when supervising a learner can you?

My instructor used to, not whilst I was completely new to it all though, and he'd always ask if I minded.

It's up to you really, I mean if it bothers you I would maybe just mention it to him and see what he says :)

It's not up to the OP, it is illegal, and for a very good reason. Learner drivers need to be supervised because they are not competent to drive unsupervised, and not so they just have someone sat next to them, to instruct them.

Learner drivers (especially those on their first lesson, like the OP) will not have built up the automatic reactions in case of an emergency. And so the person supervising them should be concentrating fully, just as if they were actually driving.

It seems that far too many people are too complacent about the use of mobiles whilst driving.

Surely the point is that the "supervisor" needs to be concentrating and looking out for road dangers as the "learner" at this stage may not be fully aware of dangers, also should something happen, the "supervisor" may need to reach across and grab the wheel to steer around danger.

Illegal and for a good reason, in some ways far worse than for an experienced driver to be holding a phone whilst driving?

I expect someone teaching driving to have a higher than average standard of driving, even when not teaching. When my children were wanting to learn to drive, I started looking at the behaviour of driving school cars being driven by the trainer. I soon crossed off my list the ones who slipped through junctions as the lights turned red, were using their phones while driving, were breaking the speed limit and so on.

A large number of complaints about the standard of driving of an instructor turned out to be spouses.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what point you are trying to make??

From your username and avatar, you are giving the impression that you are an accident investigator. Yet you seem to have a very blas! view about the driving instructor illegally using their mobile, when they should have been fully concentrating on their first time student.

You're very passionate about this aren't you?

OP, if you thought it was fine then it's a non-issue for me.

Well, if a driving instructor's spouse was a rotten driver, the instructor shouldn't allow them to use the car that has their business details plastered all over it.

It's bad for business and it's a poor advert for their teaching skills that they can't help their spouse to be a better driver.

You would be passionate about it if a friend or relative was killed by a learner driver who wasn't being properly supervised, wouldn't you??
