Might it be that you were on an emergency tax code or that you worked for so many months and paid tax but you didn't earn enough over the total tax year?
Or that for a few weeks you worked 60 hours and then paid shed loads of tax that month but next month you only worked 15 hours per week.
Have you got an end of the year P60 from your employers?
Did you work for more than one place in the last tax year.

Thanks mhoc, I don't have an employer. The work I do is just odd days for a government dept and although they pay me, Im not employed by them.
I had a look through my stuff today and it seems I only paid £350 in tax last year (from work) and they've given me £70 of it back??? So Im none the wiser
