Tips for reducing heart burn in pregnancy

re the heartburn = baby boy thing.... right at the end of my pregnancy i had the worst heartburn ive ever experienced and i had a girl,
i ended up at the docs and was prescribed a giant no name brand bottle of minty chalky evil that i swigged straight from the bottle in the middle of the night!
this time, my heartburn started as soon as i found out i was expecting, ive been on rennies, big glasses of milk and propping up with cushions... it hasnt been bad enough yet to cry to the docs... but there is still plenty of time
my triggers have been fats (like pastry, buttered toast)
infact anything i r-e-a-l-l-y want seems to start it off0 -
Maalox is what I eventually drank straight from the bottle, though everyone swears they will never end up that bad.:rotfl:
Best of luck- keep a little spare for afterwards too- I expected to be able to swig a big glass of OJ as soon as I had given birth, but was deeply shocked to find I still had heartburn:mad:
You and me both!!
I used to get 4 bottles at a time on prescription....1 for upstairs, 1 for downstairs, 1 for my handbag and 1 for my desk
every week!!!
I was lucky in that mine disappeared as soon as I gave birth0 -
Hi
I suffered terribly with heartburn and indigestion when I was pregnant with my DS's, and I also found the taste of gaviscon foul it made me feel worse, my mum told me to get a bottle of peppermint cordial and just sip that when I had heatburn or indigestion and it worked wonders for me.
I used to keep a bottle by the side of my bed.
I hope it gets better for you soon.0 -
I had terrible heartburn with both my pregnancies, it was so bad with the first one that when it first started I was in hospital for 5 days, I thought I was dying...i don't suppose drinking the pickled onion vinegar helped ;-)
I was given gaviscon, it made me cry just to think about taking it, I hate the stuff but the heartburn was also terrible, so I just had to bite the bullet and take it and it worked wonders but the whole build up to having to take it was pathetic0 -
triggers:
leafy green veg
chocolate
spicy food
coffee
high fat anything
onions
citrus
(no smoking or alcohol) I assume that is the case anyway
increase elevation of the head and shoulders 8" ie bricks under the head end of the bed
Have the biggest meal before 2pm. Last meal at least 3 hours before bed. 4 or 5 smaller meals are better than 3 big meals0 -

Rennie rapeze worked for me - I think it is one of the few that you can take when pregnant. I really couldn't stand the liquid the doctor prescribed and neither could any of my babes... then again none of them like anything that I ate!
Although I found that the orange and strawberry were the only palletable flavours - I passed the remainder to hubby...
Hope it eases for you
omg SNAP!!
hubby now rather put out that since i'm not pregnant any more, i don't have a ready supply of half packs of flavoured rennies for him0 -
Onions are my worst trigger. Plus anything fatty like chips.
I don't mind the aniseed gaviscon TBH!0 -
I had a midwife at my hospital carry out acupuncture every few weeks for whatever was an issue for me at that time - is this an option for you?The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0

gaviscon advance (the extra strong stuff for me!!)
i had really bad heartburn when i was i labour and was swigging the stuff as fast as the midwife would give it to me.

Almost everything triggers it for me. I 've found that on days when I've eaten fresh raspberries or blueberries it has helped to ward it off a bit. I have since read that lots of berries inc strawberries contain ellagic acid which is used for treating heartburn. I haven't found anything other than rennies to be a (temporary) cure for it once it's there, and milk can help a little if it's only mild and I'm sitting up, but I do seem to have better days if berries are included in my diet.“We all pay for life with death, so everything in between should be free.”0
