It feels like just a few weeks since the morning sickness stopped and now here comes the heart burn!

I have another 3 months to go and am desperate for some tips on reducing heart burn.

Any tips?

Thanks

your GP should be able to prescribe Gaviscon liquid which you can then use your free prescriptions on, Mrs Tide was prescribed it first time around for similar reasons, she's just been using the tablet form thsi time around though
  • Yes go and see your doctor and insist you want something to stop it. When I was pregnant I had awful heartburn and the midwife told me to drink milk and use an extra pillow. As a consequence the acid caused scarring to my oesophogus which has resulted in me not being able to eat properly for the past nine years. I have also been admitted to hospital on 7 occassions to have surgical proceedures to help the problem.
I don't want to scare you. I just want to let you know that there are tablets you can take when pregnant to stop the heartburn; and ignoring it can have serious consequences.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and I'll smash your face in. :D

Excellent post CP, I thought the answer would be not to lie down!
I got a prescription of Gaviscon and I was sorry to find it was the most vile stuff I have ever tasted. Last time I had to take some in the middle of the night I followed it up with a bottle of water, two apricots, two biscuits, a rice cake and some chocolate!! Just to get the taste out. The heartburn returned by the end of this feast of course :o
I wonder if diet has any effect on this symptom...

Gaviscon became a very close friend of mine in pregnancy lol I couldn't stomach the aniseed(original) so had to get the peppermint one which was slightly more paletable. Milk certainly helps & so does eating melon.
Try not to lay too flat as others have said.
Hope it eases soon for you, its awful to suffer with.
    hugs

Funny enough i got told milk made it worse,? it never did for me!!!

try some bicarbonate(sp?) of soda with a bit of water that works wonders!!!

    Not nice but good!!!
    Better than gaviscon!
i suffered it really bad with both my boys!

  • Hi there,

Rennie rapeze worked for me - I think it is one of the few that you can take when pregnant. I really couldn't stand the liquid the doctor prescribed and neither could any of my babes... then again none of them like anything that I ate!

Although I found that the orange and strawberry were the only palletable flavours - I passed the remainder to hubby...

Hope it eases for you :o

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!

I suffered with dreadful heartburn and was actually vomiting with it towards the end of my pregnancy.

I found Gaviscon quite yukky, but discovered that Tesco Peppermint indigestion tablets worked reasonably well. I slept with my head raised on three pillows at night, which limited the reflux of acid and found that drinking plain water gave me temporary relief.

The good news is that as soon as you've given birth it disappears and if you're anything like me, you'll be presented with a little gorilla who needed a haircut at one month old!

Maalox is what I eventually drank straight from the bottle, though everyone swears they will never end up that bad.:rotfl:

Best of luck- keep a little spare for afterwards too- I expected to be able to swig a big glass of OJ as soon as I had given birth, but was deeply shocked to find I still had heartburn:mad:
