Tips for reducing heart burn in pregnancy

  • Thanks all.

I too am dreadful with Gaviscon, and being so close to having just stopped the sickness, I am loath to even attempt it right now. I have managed to work out my food triggers and have seriously limited my meal options because of it.

Well last night I check the packet to make sure it was safe and chewed on a Rennie Chewable that was in our cupboard, and it did help settle it for an hour or so. When it came back I had a little glass of milk, and that too helped a little. I settled down and managed to get to sleep only to be woken up by my husband at 2:30 am as he came in from a very rare night out with the boys, and found it had come back again, I wasn't in the best of moods.

We have a friend staying at the moment, for the boys night out, so when he goes today I will swipe his pillows and elivate myself a little more, thanks.

I think I am going to have to stop eating satsumas, and orange juice as I don't think they are helping.

I had heart burn with my son 3 years ago, but it feels so long ago I can't remember what I did, it was also winter so not sure if I adjusted my foods differently because of the seasons, maybe there is more acid in the foods for summer!

Thanks again for all you tips.
  • Oh I forgot to ask.

Has anyone got a list of foods that they found triggered it?

Everything with me, I'm afraid, but citrus fruits and weetabix would make it even worse, I thought.

I remember how painful it is, I had gaviscon tablets and sat up with pillows supporting me, in the end I had six pillows propping me up

I too was slugging back Mallox from the bottle. Some workmates were sure I had vodka in there! As for the boy thing. I had a girl who was bald as a coot, and suffered from day 1 right through to birth with severe heartburn.
    Eating bananas may help.

I was prescribed Mucogel when I was pregnant. It tastes like Milk of Magnesia, and it helped settle mine down.

I also used to sleep with a pillow under my chest, so I was propped up at an angle, rather than have extra pillows under my head. That helped too.

I was told the worse the heartburn is, the more hair your baby will have. She arrived with a masses of hair about an inch long. It'll be interesting to see if you get a hairy baby or a bald one!
Here I go again on my own....

Goodness, a summer diet is certainly more acidic isn't it. Not like creamy casseroly winter. That explains the pain after consuming a grapefruit...
I used Rennies in my past life, but they take too long to dissolve, don't last as long AND if you take at night it feels like they have dissolved your teeth by morning. And in true MSE style I will have to finish the bottle of Gaviscon! Aarghh. Do doctors not know what this stuff is? She could've asked if I had tried it before. What a waste.
But nice to see it can all only get worse. Yey.

I was also on Gaviscon for the last 3 months it was a right pain in the backside as the dr would only prescribe 1 small bottle at a time. Somebody told me that Refresher sweets work and I was pleasantly suprised to find that they do

Definitely pastry for me. It was so yummy yet caused such pain.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and I'll smash your face in. :D
  • I found the only thing that worked for me was the fruit flavoured indigestion tablets from tesco, the peppermint flavour worked also but not as nice as the fruit. I really feel for you as it is very painful to have heartburn, especially on a daily basis - I suffered it for almost 6 months with my first child, about 4 months with my second. I had those tablets in every handbag, every room and took them everywhere - I couldn't have managed without them. Hope you don't feel too bad.
