I've been with Simply Mail Solutions for a couple of years now, and am happy with them. You get a yourchoice.simplyms.com domain included but can purchase other domains or point an existing domain to your SMS account if you prefer.

I've heard not-so-good things about 1&1 hosting, but I've been using GMX's email for years and have never had any problems with them. Most other free services I looked at (at the time) had adverts inserted into emails, didn't offer IMAP access or had some other reason that made GMX look more appealing.
Actually, I've just come across this review of several email providers, including GMX, GMail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook.com and iCloud, and it doesn't look like there's much separating them other than the design of their web interface. Oh well, I still like GMX and I'd recommend it to anyone. :-)

Anyway, since I have my own domain name and use an email client to store a copy of my emails locally, if anything happened to GMX I could just get a new account with a different provider, switch the domain re-direction, and everything would be "back to normal".0 -
Thanks for all the suggestions - its not easy finding a good email provider. In the end I went with this one as it seems to meet most of my requirements:

Perhaps so but does it matter? I pay them a minimal amount and they provide me with the services I require. I'm not bothered about how it works as long as I get what I need.0 -

well as long as they keep their balance topped up in the resellerclub account it should be, but if they don't their services will stop working.
as how it works ( i assume you pay using Paypal)
the xyz will have to place funds in their RC account, so that when anyone orders a service you pay the xyz then they pay RC through their balance and then you get the login details etc, so each month you pay for your services money is take from the xyz RC account. if this account drains then the xyz will need to top this up, if they dont or forget then any service will be suspended as they have not paid.
it is a better option to go direct0 -

The best free service is gmail.com (i've used many).
It isn't ad free and it does scan your emails for marketing/ads - but all free services do.
1: It isn't "the best" - that's very subjective. Also your argument is null and void as you don't really give any reason why it's "the best".
2: Outlook.com does not scan your mail, therefore your statement of "all free services do" is incorrect in the way you wrote it.
I personally use outlook.com for email back-end which is fronted by a personal website address.
Outlook ties into my phone and has one of the best layouts to date. They are constantly improving and listening to feedback (I asked for a feature along with a few other people, after a few months it was added (I am a member of a well connected website)).
It has ads yes, but as mania112 says, all free services do.
Microsoft is also fighting against Google by making people aware how much tracking goes on. Gmail scans your mail to give you "personalised ads". I don't like ads so would rather them be un-personalised so I can make a quicker assessment if they are valuable or not.
To date, no internet ad has been of any value and would welcome their eradication but that isn't going to happen.
Microsoft are also encouraging the use of the "do not track" feature of their web browser to stop websites like Facebook tracking sites you visit even if you're not on the Facebook website.
You can download the Microsoft Live suite of applications, but only pick the "mail" to install. Then you will have an outlook (the program) like layout without ads.
However OP, you are going to need a specialised service if you want a web browser option without ads. Is there a specific reason for this? Many of the free options are worth it for ease of use.0 -

I'm not sure what the point of this would be - the deals they have aren't as good and there would still be inter-business relationships which, if they broke down, would lead to the service falling over.
I don't see the problem going through a reseller anyway people do this all the time in respect to- Phones (mobile and fixed)
- Internet providers
- Gas & electricity
- Insurance
- etc etc - the list goes on....
