Recommend me an email provider

I'm going to be forced to change my ISP due to a house move shortly so I am now looking for an email provider that is independent of my new ISP so I won't have to go to the trouble of changing my email address in future. I do have a list of requirements that puts the usual gmail and outlook services out of contention so I'm looking for recommendations on alternatives. My requirements are as follows:

  • Must support IMAP
  • Must stand a reasonable chance of getting a sensible address relating to my name
  • Must be ad free
  • Must not scan my email for marketing purposes
  • Must have a reasonable amount of storage (say 5GB)

I don't mind having to pay as long as the costs are reasonable - recommendations please.

    A VERY NON-Helpful answer:

Thought about seetting up your own mail server?
It's probably the only way to say 100% "scanned for marketing opportunities" free lol

Something like a cheap Raspberry-Pi and a fixed IP address + Domain name and with a bit of tinkering you're good to go ^_^

i suppose that's one option but its probably less hassle to go for a paid service.

get a domain from a registrar like 123-reg.co.uk and at the same time order their email service

.info domain currently £1.99 a year
    .co.uk domain £3.49 a year

    http://www.123-reg.co.uk/email-hosting/

    personal only 1GB 1.19 a month
    business 2GB at £5.99 a month

    or a MS exchange mailbox

    Take a look at Runbox
    https://runbox.com/
    Runbox is Ad Free

The Runbox email service is absolutely ad free. Some free services not only display ads next to your email, but analyze your messages so that they can show related ads in your web browser. Some services even put ads at the end of your email in the message body. You don’t see them when you write your message, but they appear in the message the recipient sees.
Runbox is entirely independent, neutral, and clean unlike some services that put more and more effort into tuning their ad offerings, as that is how they make money.
someone on /. had the same sort of query as you!

I got a domain (e.g. myname.co.uk) for a couple of quid a year. I use Thunderbird as an email client, which is set up to connect to my free GMX inbox.

All my email appears to come from me@myname.co.uk, but I'm actually using the GMX service randomname123@gmx.co.uk.

The best free service is gmail.com (i've used many).

It isn't ad free and it does scan your emails for marketing/ads - but all free services do.

So to tick all your boxes you will have to pay money.

I think buying your own domain and hosting package isn't worth the effort/cost just for an email (because you'll soon start picking up spam anyway).

So if you insist on avoiding adverts, runbox.com (or similar) will fit the bill.

There are no adverts at all in GMX emails -- you just see them if you log in via the website.
  • I recently switched from Gmail to Outlook.com. I found Gmail's interface just awful, and it's just gotten worse...

Outlook has a lovely clean interface, very minimal ads, screenshot here

^^^ though I've just realised I don't know what IMAP means, so Outlook.com might not have it! :-/
