  • I agree about the packing thing if you are on your own shopping its all a rush they have great big long conveyor belts to put your shopping on which is great but after the checkout all you get is a small metal shelf and they dont give you anytime to pack your shopping .You end up just putting it back into the trolley loose then either load it into bags after you pay and move away from the checkouts or load it into your bags in the boot of the car which if its raining isnt the best.
Saying that I do use aldi and lidl because its cheaper but its definately a more stressful experience

My top tip for packing at Aldi.
First pick up an empty cardboard box from the fruit & veg shelves - the type they use for displaying lettuce & bananas - about 6 inches deep and fits just nicely into the bottom of the trolly.
Load the shopping from the conveyor belt straight into the box and then lift out straight into car.
    Easy

    Hi all,

Is it sad that I,m getting excited as they are building an Aldi round the corner from us..... due to open start of september.

I use Lidl alot at the moment, with a quick dash to Mr S for the things I can,t get.

Love their cold meats and jars of antipasti, and always buy Mr L,s black bin bags, so thick compared to any general supermarket ones.

Do Aldi have good meat offers? I always get the allowed 6 of any HP meat offers from Lidl - saves us a fortune.

Do you live in West Yorkshire?

The best meat special offers seem to be found in Lidl and the best fruit and veg special offers in Aldi but that's just my perception so may be wrong!

My darling, I don't think they are a religion - just a shop.

    Blasphemy! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  • I am a label snob!

I first ventured into aldi to get cat litter - way cheaper than the same stuff from sainsburys. On the way to the till I spotted some toro loco.

The wine persuaded us to venture in again. This time to do more if a big shop. For a few weeks we proclaimed that we couldn't get everything we need at aldi so still had to go to sainsburys. I still used the argument that was too much hassle and we should stick to one shop at sainsburys.

However for the last few weeks we have shopped solely at aldi.

One reason is that it is SO MUCH QUICKER! We needed some sweet chilli sauce one week so got a bottle of the only one aldi stock. Our last purchase from sainsburys meant comparing 4 or 5 brands in 3 different size bottles in FOUR different aisles.

On average our shops have been 20-30 pounds cheaper per week!! I had some spare time thus week so duplicated fridays shop on mysupermarket.com. The shop was 27 cheaper than sainsburys and 22 cheaper than asda.

I love their sliced white loaf. 75p. Cheaper than sainsburys own loaf which is grey and dry as soon as you open the bag, but comparable to a 1.50 hovis loaf.

I have my qualms about the lack of date on the fruit and veg (though we haven't had the 1 lemon in a net of 5 going moldy really quickly like we get at sainsburys most weeks).

The cardboard sleeves seem to come off the trays of sausages too readily. Sometimes the shelf has unlabelled meat with a variety of sleeves near by. Its scary because there is such a wide range of best before dates.

It is such a social event. I have never been in the alcohol section of sainsburys and given/received recommendations about wine before.

Although I am a label snob I can genuinely say that almost everything I have tasted gas been better than weve had before. The one exception was pork steaks in a chinese sauce. They were just too gristly and fatty.

We recommend aldi to everyone we meet (though it does seem we ard very much newcomers amongst our friends). We have friends who worry about their food shopping bills, they "just can't get them any lower".Stopping the ocado home delivery might help!!! The day we get them into aldi will be the day our conversion will be complete

Just been to Aldi and have done a comparison with tesco, tesco would have been 31% more than Aldi for the same quality of groceries.

Some of the Aldi products are larger, I haven't adjusted for this.
So Tesco would've cost significantly more for less.
