The reason surely is that BT do not want to provide a free email service to those who no longer use them for broadband provision.
    Seems quite reasonable to me.
Strange to report running this sort of thing does actually cost money.

Actually i'm suprised ISP's continue to provide an email service at all.
It must be a real mega hassle what with spam protection, virus checking and the rest.
Then customers who want a free service with all the caveats that it entails such as your mails be scanned by gmail/adverts etc can use the likes of Gmail, Hotmail whatever.
Those who want a business grade high quality solution can go and use the services of a paid for provider of email services.
ISP's could then concentrate soley on providing internet connectivity

The reason why BT can get away with this is that currently in the UK Email provision is unregulated by Ofcom or any other body. There is an e-petition that is trying to get this situation changed.
You can access it if you go to the governments epetition website

I fail to see what BT trying to "get away with". Or indeed, for that matter, why you think regulation would make the slightest bit of difference.

    Talk21 email address's were
"Developed as part of BT's commitment to supply everyone in the UK with an email address for life, the site features an intuitive interface designed to appeal to both novice and experienced users alike"

    Further details here

Talk21 email address's were provided free independant of any commitment to BT. They are going back on their commitment and there is no one you can complain to.
Without regulation you have anarchy. Other forms of communication are regulated why not email that is probably the most important system.
BT can currently remove any email address you have with them and you have no automatic redress. Most other ISPs are similar. There are other issues due to the lack of regulation.

This is turning out as bad publicity for BT. An email address upheaval during the summer holidays with only I months notice, when they have been planning this for 6 months, utterly disgraceful They are blackmailing me to pay for a service that was set up with Labour Government funding for the New Millennium. British Telecom Free for life email address. Who would trust them in the future. Was going to sign up to BT Sport but 6 months down the line they will probably start charging a huge monthly fee. They are perhaps in trouble because its been announced today that they will let Virginmedia have access to BT Sport. They surely wouldn't have done this if the takeup had met predictions, who wants to give a rival a slice of the cake. BT has blown it on all fronts if you ask me.
  • I'm furious about this having also had my talk21 address for over 14 years. I can understand that BT may decide to pull the plug on free email to non-paying customers, despite this going entirely against the promises and marketing given at the launch of the service - but to do this at virtually no notice is just apalling - I've got less than a month to sort through 14 years worth of saved/sent and received emails, notify 14 years worth of organisations that I have registered this address with and also port all of the emails I need to keep out of Talk21 and into a new provider and I just think it has been very poorly handled by the company. During this month I have my youngest daughters Christening with family descending on us for 1 week as well as a 1 week holiday booked, giving me less than a fortnight. I think I have every right to be annoyed. BT have judged this one badly and in my eyes confirmed once and for all that they are an absolute joke of a business and hold the general public with no regard whatsoever - lets not forget they tout themselves as the leading communications company in the country but then cut off millions of email customers at what may as well be zero notice. Just plain wrong - I have purchased BT products in the past but I will never purchase another BT product again following this event.

    It's not a spoof.

BT want people to switch to their broadband or pay for their email accounts.

Where can people complain to about this sudden change with little notice giving people time to change?

Where can you ask questions & get support about this ?

It's not sudden though, how much time do you need to make the descion of if you want to continue using the service or not?

Of course it's sudden, giving a month's notice in termination of service without notice.

You will find there are many employees in the UK whose contracts specify only a month's notice of termination as well.
There are many things in life which have a 30 day notice period on them of some form.

How much as BT charging for those ex-customers to maintain the service?
Can you pay for only a few months more rather than a full year to enable you to buy in effect an additional extension to the notice period while you sort yourself out.
