So BT are lying then are they?
Well since they said to DonnySaver, more or less
    a) This is a scam
    and
    b) This is not a scam

both statements are unlikely to be true.

I would put it down to incompetence rather than a deliberate lie.

Indeed - not the sort of thing a reputable company would do.

    More incompetence, I think.

However, assuming you have an account which matches the description, I still think you'll have to pay up or move email. The page on the website is the clincher for me.

Like I said... BT incompetence. (I suspect they've resurrected an old email template.)

You must choose what you think is best... but I'd be interested to hear how you think the message got onto BT's own support website if it's a scam?

And also why BT confirmed to DonnySaver (at the second attempt, but also at the third attempt) that it's a genuine message?

(I'm honestly not trying to get at you, but I hate to think that you or anyone else might lose access to their emails because they dismissed it as a scam, if, as I suspect, it's a genuine BT Policy.)

BT Premium Mail: Monthly fee applies on a one month minimum term. Payment by Direct Debit and monthly e-bills only. See full terms and conditions for more details.

No it is you who is very dodgy! How else other than logging in could they validate that you are actually who you say that you are before switching your account?

You have even posted a link to BT's full terms and condition but you still don't believe what you see!

    IT IS NOT A SCAM

What exactly do you expect a board guide to do if you refuse to believe the detailed information on the BT website!

I'm just wondering if someone could advise on this for me. Although I don't now have bt internet my ex wife does. If she added my btinternet.com address as an additional email address on her account, could this get around this problem & would I still be able to use my current email address without paying the £1.60 per month?

    Best Regards - Avenue
  • I don't think this is a scam, as it's on the BT web site, and it was confirmed a while ago that BT were dropping yahoo at there e-mail provider.

    theregister .co .uk / 2013/05/31/bt_ditches_yahoo

What is also odd, is how BT are deciding which e-mail accounts to delete and which not to, I've not received the E-mail (checked spam box etc), but the wife has. Does that mean my account is safe from being deleted?

I have several BT Business accounts, but it says you are only allow to link your account to a residential broadband account.

With many believing it's a scam, or simply not receiving an e-mail, I can't see many customers (old, new, or potential) being happy with BT.

Got 2 accounts with BT had £1.60 e-mail on one but not the other. It looks genuine to me but like other users on here massive hassle to print out e-mails(or use gmail fetch) going back more than 10years. Would also have to advise all companies who use for dividend paymets/online purchases/ bank support emials etc. Would guess at more than 250 accounts or hard copies required.
I've e-mailed Which? this morning so will have to say what they say.
Would pay £1.60/month just not to have hassle but could be that if e-mail is spam I could be authorising access to my bank account- don't know what problems this would bring. Always remember Jeremy Clarkson giving out his account details on TV has he didn't believe scammers could get access to it-only to find his account was plundered!!!
Doesn't look like a scam to me but now beginning to wonder, could really do with a statement from someone who if authorized at BT. Looks like something to me that moderators or Martin should be taking up.

    Why is it illegal?

Look at it the other way - you've been freeloading for all these years, and they've now decided to cut their losses. Is it THEIR fault you have used the address for all your bank accounts etc.?

And bank accounts can be changed to use an alternative address. You just need to change the address and confirm it by an email they send to your current address - so do it before you lose it.

The reason why BT can get away with this is that currently in the UK Email provision is unregulated by Ofcom or any other body. There is an e-petition that is trying to get this situation changed.
You can access it if you go to the governments epetition website
