You don't need to enter a pin to get a refund and and how often do they check your card when you purchase. I understand the procedure and I was told they couldnt touch your card anymore to avoid fraud. It never states the person who bought it needs to be there.
That must vary between stores - you do at John Lewis.
Did they call you a thief? If not, you have no grounds for complaint.0 -
Aside from the issue of using the card, I'd presume that it was your wife that bought the item? If so, you have no contract with the retailer and they can refuse to let you return it.
Surely in this case the OP is returning the goods as the agent of the purchaser, much like using Royal Mail to return goods bought at a distance.0 -
I more often than not have to enter my PIN when I return an item to a shop having paid with my card. I am more surprised when I do not need my PIN.0

The retailer is simply following rules they have in place probably from their finance department and the banks. The retailer I work for will not process a refund if the cardholder is not present, the pin must be used to get the refund, we have been told its something to do with banking procedures and I presume to stop fraud.
Your wife is going to have to go back to the store for her refund in person. She is the one who has inconvenienced you, not the store, the stores have policies like this in place to protect themselves and their customers.0 -
The OT and vent is ridiculous - has this heat corroded peoples common sense?
Even if you do not use the PIN number, if the bank find out you have been using your partners card (refund or not) and a fraud flag is loaded you will get nothing back.

Nope, the OP is simply breaking the rules of the bank that issued the card and the shop is in the right to refuse to serve him.0 -
If the bank found out then it is fraud (partner or not) and they would stop the card and if they find its a regular thing then could even withdraw banking services to you and your partner.0

For any transaction like this the cardholder needs to be present as per all banking protocol.
Is the husband of the cardholder the cardholder?
Should the husband of the cardholder be annoyed when shop staff do what they are meant to do rather than what he thinks they should do?
Should banking rules and regulations be re-written because some shop staff are lazy, wanting a quiet life, bored to tears, itching to go for a break, looking at the queue behind, disinterested about the person in front of them?
I won't supply the answers0 -
Trouble is Consumers have no idea what agreements a retailer has to adhere too for them to provide card services, but i bet the same consumers would complain more if one day they went into the retailer and found that they could no longer pay by card as they retailer had their card services revoked because they failed to follow the agreement they signed.0
