I was told even though I had the correct card and the receipts and all goods were perfect I was not allowed to return the items as it was not my card. Where do I stand with handm

I think where you stand, is that they're within their rights.

Technnically AFAIK only the person the card is issued to is meant to use it, and that includes the spouse of the person the card is issued to.

I wish more shops were observant enough to spot that the card was issued to someone of the opposite sex, it might reduce fraud a bit.

Well it obviously isnt your card
    Sounds like a sensible policy

Did anyone suggest you were a thief? If so, you should complain. If not, and they were simply following procedure (and this is standard procedure), then your wife will need to return them.

Is your wife aware that she should not disclose her pin to anyone, including yourself?
  • You don't need to enter a pin to get a refund and and how often do they check your card when you purchase. I understand the procedure and I was told they couldnt touch your card anymore to avoid fraud. It never states the person who bought it needs to be there.

Aside from the issue of using the card, I'd presume that it was your wife that bought the item? If so, you have no contract with the retailer and they can refuse to let you return it.
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
    Now 20% cooler
  • But thank you totally your input it has helped a great deal

Not sure about complaining on this one. Stores get barraged by thieves and it calcifies the soul a bit. A pain in the neck but the wife is going to have to finish the job
