Best place to advertise to sell a car?

Hi all,

When I've sold cars in the past, I've always put them in the Autotrader, but sadly they don't print the magazine anymore - the only option is to advertise on the website. I realise everything is moving online these days, but I still liked the option of buying the mag to scan through... Anyway, to advertise on the Autotrader website costs a minimum of £36, and I'm not sure whether to bite the bullet and pay, or if it's better to stick it on ebay? I've already put it on Gumtree, but I'm not sure what sort of response we'll get from there - it's probably not the first place I'd look if I needed a new car.
Any advice at all? Are there other effective cheap places to advertise? (Selling price £1495, so can't do bargain basement I think?)
Thanks a lot!
I don't think I can hang on til Friday...

Last few I've sold have been eFence.

At £15 for a classified advert it is a cheap way to hit a big audience.

However, in an MSE manner, don't under estimate the power of a For Sale sign in the window!
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • Thanks - I'd never heard of eFence! Just googled it and can't find it though - was it really efence?
Tried to for sale sign, and had offers of swapping the car for 3 different vehicles so far, but sadly nobody wanting to actually pay for it! :)
As car no longer insured, I can't leave it parked on the road, but looking to sell asap, hence need to advertise...

Ah... welll the eFence name came up as there were several instances of stolen goods rocking up on eBay in the early days. Easy way to move stolen items on!

Depending on condition you could go for an auction but expect to be messed about a bit is my experience. Three days will let you get shot quickly at least.

The longer term classified advert isn't too bad though. At that price it reachs a big audience.

Make a vid, upload it to YouTube and put a link in the advert, plus take some good pics and have a decent description you should sell if it is priced well.

Remember, no test drives if the insurance is lapsed though.

I had mine up a few months ago on eBay and Autotrader. In the two weeks it took to sell I had 1 message on eBay and around 20 on Autotrader..

One hint for placing an ad on Autotrader is the price bracket that you are selling it for. My car was for sale at £3200 but I listed it in the "up to £3,000" because it would get alot more views than people trawling through the ads that were up to £4,000, I hope you understand..

Pistonheads is good but the forum is aimed at car enthusiasts not really the first average joe goes looking for a car. I mean you on the Pistonhead classifieds you can search for certain eras of cars.

I've had a lot of luck on Gumtree and its free, including 9 free photo's.

I advertised my dads clio on there one evening and someone rang that night and bought it the next day.

I advertised a Motorbike helmet on there and my phone rang within 20 mins after listing it, 20mins later the guy turned up and bought it.

I've sold quite a few other items on there but not as quickly as above but even so, I've found it to be very good.
