Why? It is fit for purpose! The amount of times people don't understand what fit for purpose actually means is unbelievable!

Basically you don't like it because it makes a noise. The vast majority of fans make a noise unless they specify they are completely silent which I've not noticed one that has.

The fan blows air, therefore it is fit for purpose!

Stop confusing you don't like it because you can't sleep through it and what fit for purpose means. It might not be fit for your purpose but that is not what fit for purpose means in the eyes of the law.

    Irrelevant.

The OP was told when she bought it that she had 28 days to return it if it wasn't suitable.

It is not suitable, and she wants to return it.

I'm sure she would have sent it back sooner, but as her daughter's baby was born sleeping, then she had rather more harrowing things on her mind!

I'm sure Littlewoods would agree that this is an extenuating circumstance, and would be more than happy to arrange a return and refund Sarah?

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

If Sarah was told over the phone that she could return the fan within 28 days if she didn't like it, then doesn't that become a part of the contract she made with them, regardless of what it says on the website?

It seems unreasonable of Littlewoods to refuse to provide Sarah with a copy of the recording of the phone conversation. What are they trying to hide? She should try requesting it under the Data Protection Act. (I have done this in the past with the DWP).

I agree and do think that in the circumstances some people have been a bit un-sympathetic on the OP. Although in the eyes of the law this has nothing to do with the issue of return please try to remember this lady and her family are suffering at this time.

The thing that most shocked me is that you would appear to have to pay £1000 for a £400 fan. If you have to keep this fan then you really need to pay the £400 before the interest part kicks in. We can help you on MSE so stick here and ask away.
Its a real shame you bought such an expensive fan when you get others for a fraction of the price.
If they have the phone conversation then they should return your money as promised- despite what it says on any other paperwork.
If you weren't promised this, then Littlewoods are acting within their rights. Can you imagine how many stories they get excusing the time passed before complaining?
I think we can all understand though that you had other far more important things to worry about.
The least that we can do is make sure you only pay the price of the fan so please tell us your outcome and we can help from there on if need be.

How on earth does it go from £450 to £1k with BNPL?

Isn't this a little far fetched? Seeing we don't know what was really said in the original phone call yet until it is confirmed.

If something was being sold for, say, £100 online and the rep said they would sell it to me for £90, I wouldn't expect to be charged £100 just because that's the information that I would find online.

If I was told something by a rep, I would consider that part of the contract, if necessary overriding any conflicting information online (in the same way that phone/tv companies will often do discounts to try and get your business).

Or if you're not ready to pay at the end of the payment-free period, you don't have to. Spread the cost even further using your Shopping Account.
I'd guess that, if you don't pay by the end of the payment-free period, interest at some appalling rate is backdated to the date of purchase as well as the ongoing "spreading the cost".

It seems to be the done thing these days to back date the interest to the date of purchase. But for the price to nearly double and a half seems insane. This would be giving PDL companies a run for their money, except the difference being they are only designed for short-term borrowing, unlike Littlewoods.

Their website doesn't appear to show any interest rates though - now there's a surprise.

That's a staggering amount to pay for a fan. And the amount charged for interest heaps insult to injury. By comparison, on the first day of the heatwave I bought a large oscillating fan from Argos that was half price and runs almost silently (or as quiet as a fan can anyway). It set me back the princely sum of £12.99.
