I purchased a Dyson fan from Littlewoods catalogue two weeks ago, plugged it in, found it incredibly noisy -- no way could I sleep through that -- unplugged it, packaged it up and phoned to return it. I have been told I can't do this as it has been used.
How on earth do you know whether a fan is going to be suitable or not until you've listened to it? Other reviews have stated how noisy it is.
I purchased this on a buy now pay later scheme and it's going to cost me £1007.
When I ordered it I asked if I could return it if I found it unsuitable and I was told yes. Littlewoods say they are going to listen in to that recording and if I was told that, they will accept it back as I was given the wrong information. I asked if I too could listen in and they said no I'm not allowed.
I am horrified that I've got to pay all that money for a fan that I plugged in for half an hour, found it too noisy to sleep, and that's all I did.
Does anyone know if I have any comeback here?

She's had it 2 weeks. Quite likely to be too late for DSRs.

Its a difficult one as there is no actual fault on the item you just found it unsuitable. You need to get them to check that recording if thats what littlewoods told you about returning unsuitable items then they should honour it.0

As to 'why buy it', people have different tolerances to noise - I know my OH and I are totally different - the OH can sleep through pretty much anything while I wake up if a particularly loud feather falls to the floor.0 -
There is no 'automatic' right to return anything to a retailer just because you don't like it, unless under DRS (for which you now appear to be out of time as you've left it too long).
Any additional rights are limited to those that may be offered by the retailer. If they told you that you could return it, and you can prove that, then you can reasonably claim that it was mis-sold, which sems to be your only option here.
All you had to do was to go and 'test' it in a conventional shop before ordering it.
LW are correct: it's now secondhand and cannot be resold as new, so they'll take a big hit on the resale value.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Bad luck that the heatwave lasted more than a week, and you have lost your rights under the DSR.
If a fan had kept me awake at night, I would have returned it the next day.0 -

1) The date you received the fan
2) The date you asked to return it.

What is DSR? Tom I'm over 70 and would really appreciate you not using the sort of language you do (to me anyway please).
I read some reviews that said it was noisy and a couple that said they were pleased with it. I searched for other much cheaper fans on the Littlewoods site but they'd all gone. I purchased this one at over £400 but on a buy now pay later because 1) I don't have the ready cash for a "quiet" fan and couldn't sleepin this heat and 2) Because I've bought another quite expensive item this way and had no problem with the repayments (I don't order willy nilly from this catalogue -- just a couple of items, this being one) and 3) I was told by the order line I could return it within the guaranteed period if not satisfied. So I overlooked the "noisy reviews" believing if it was indeed that bad I could return it.
I ordered it on July 17th, tried it out on the same night, packaged it up the following day then had to go to Bath to my daughter's whose own baby had just been born sleeping. So the next few days were a horrendous total blur. I've only just returned and saw the box still in the hall.
I phoned Littlewoods this morning and was told what I have already written.
I'm not going to pull wires out. I'm just shocked that just because I plugged it in it's now not returnable.

Unfortunately, its not returnable because you waited more than 7 days.
Your only hope now is to ask for a recording of the phone call (which they should give you under the Data Protection Act if they have kept it), and if that proves that you were told you could return it if you were unhappy then you may be able to claim a breach of contract.0
