We have reaerched the large oil filled radiators that run on electricity and are thermostatically controlled.

If you have researched oil fired radiators you should be aware that they are 100% efficient - as is all electrical heating regardless of capital cost; from a £10 heater bought at Argos to over-hyped systems costing £1,000s.

However they still all cost two or three times as much as gas to produce a unit of heat.

If you want proof, buy some £10 electrical heaters and run a trial.

Get your loft insulation topped up - the current recommendation is 270 mm / 11 inches. At three inches you're still losing a lot of heat out the roof. This will cost very little - DIY maybe £50, or get someone in - you might even qualify for it to be done for free.
  • Cardew, what you have suggested we are going doing, I have two oil filled radiators at the moment, these are thermostaically controlled. not cold enough to turn them on at the moment.

I noticed the difference in the Conservatory. it got so warm in there, This is reflected in the last bill. turned off central heating and used the heaters, this is why I was commenting on £71.00 for heating water on timing using gas.

Ic, thank you for this,:T yikes 11 inches looks like the floorboards up there will have to come up. Sadly we don't qualify for freebies as we made sure we can take care of ourselves in our old age, but :rotfl:£50.00 would be well spent. looks like the Hobbit has a job this weekend.

If you are thinking of just getting the Gas capped, remember that you will still have to pay a standing charge for the gas meter, unless you find a supplier that has none.

Our gas tariff is far more expensive than electricity tariff. This is why I did the number crunching. I consider £71,00 for water heating on a timer to be expensive.
I pay £160+ per month during winter, and that is with Economy7 storage heating and water. You should expect to pay more than that for your proposed system.

Youll be paying extra for a lot of things unless you get over the fear of direct debits, whatever happened related to id fraud is unlikely to happen again

what are they tvr's set to, how long is the water on for, how many units/kwh's are you using, quoting pounds and pence doesn't mean much without knowing the tarrif.

£71 for water heating is a lot, but presumably some of that is down to non-dd, and standing charge

it was the gas bill that shocked us. not the electricity bill. Especially as we have done ALL the right things, apart from running the heating for the month we were away. Oh the gas meter was repleaced just before the quarter that I am discussing. it has been checked since to make sure it is running correctly.
Ah, the gas meter has recently been changed, you will now have a metric meter.
If your previous one was an imperial meter it is just possible that they are still billing you as an imperial meter, if so this would inflate your bills by almost 3 times.
Post details of your £71 bill and we can check.

I know not having DD's may seem irrational to a lot of people, but unless you have to live with the aftermath and live through the problems you might rethink what has been posted regarding DD's. Really not having a dd set up is not saving that much money in the grand scheme of things. All it takes is one wrong keystroke (in my opinion) and bingo there goes your money. The other reason is our money comes from abroad and never arrives on the same day each month. No, after the problems of 2005, I am in charge and always know to the penny how much is in the bank accounts.

Just an aside. The water bill for the six months arrived in the post this morning and I have just paid it and got a discount for prompt payment. Oh the Water company classes as low water users,
£35.00 for water and £62.00 for sewerage...we are aware of what bumps up usage, so I do not consider us reckless regarding our fuel.
I have posted the tariff we are on at present.

My original questions was about replacing CHeating with oil filled electric radiators the ones that are like this .
