What to think?

A brief summary , an aquaintance's car had failed a couple of weeks back (expensive repair cam belt fail) ,

now then on Monday I sent a text asking

Me: When do you get the car back?
Reply: Get the car back this week

other texts occasional texts until Wednesday, then on Saturday I sent a text which included

Me: Have you had your car back?
Reply: Car was ready Wednesday, but haven't had pin number or card yet.

then 6 hrs later
Reply : Thanks for a reply. When you need a friend there is no one. Don't text again goodbye!

After that a couple of too-ing and fro-ing texts, but what puzzles me and hence my question is the text 6hrs later.
Is there something I may have missed? :o

Best guess is that maybe the person was hoping for a little more than 'have you got your car back yet'?

Perhaps (and I stress I'm only guessing on the little info that's there) is that they were hoping people would offer to help them with lifts etc if they needed it and the fact you didn't meant they didn't feel you were a proper friend?

I suspect it was heat of the moment stuff though so if you want to continue having a relationship with this person, maybe best to call them and ask them why they are upset?

  • 'What reply were you expecting?

I suspect s/he was angling for you to lend them money to pay for the car. &/Or to drop them off to pick it up.

  • At first I thought that perhaps your friend had just had a really bad week and was frustrated so just had such a short fuse that practically anything would have set them off. Having read #2 and #3, I now think they have the main reason though.

Well, I think it is a completely incomprehensible reply from your acquaintance.
The only way it makes sense is if you promised to pay for the repair/lend them your car til they got theirs back and you have failed to keep these promises.

However, I am fairly sure you made no such promises nor had any discussion that got close to it, hence your justified bafflement.

Only way to sort is to speak on phone or face to face and have a proper conversation, rather than vague txt speak.

My take on this is that this acquaintance couldn't pick up their car because they were waiting on a new bank card and pin code to come through. He/she should have used some initiative and asked you for help with lifts to get around, or for a short term loan so they could get their car back. Instead he/she expected you to be a mind reader and has now got all shirty because you are not and has deflected their frustration on you.

That your friend had hoped for some form of practical help.

If maintaining a good relationship with this acquaintance is important to you I would try phoning them and talking this through. Communicating by text, especially when one person feels aggrieved however misplaced that may be, is never conducive to resolving things positively. Tone and meaning can be misjudged and make a situation so much worse.

Hopefully this person will calm down and realise that if they had just asked for help, most people around them would have happily stepped in and done just that.

Beware , we do not have a complete transcript of their communication. There might well been stuff in it that could been interpreted as asking for help /opening the door for it to be offered. I do not imply that op consciously avoided mentioning it . I mean op' s question can not be answered because we have only editited texts and I understand we can only be guided by info in op in this case there seem to be insufficient one.
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.
