I've never bought or sold a car myself so I'm after some advice please

I've seen a car today that I really like, being sold privately. If I buy it I would then need to sell my current car privately, I'm happy to do this but I'm not sure how easy it is to do. My current car is taxed and MOTd but what do I do about insurance until it sells?

Contact your insurer, some will cover 3rd party for 28 days.

Ive sold a few privately. Never had a problem really and always got substantially more than any part ex offer from a dealer.

Trick is to be honest about the car and price it correctly. Price must be higher than a part ex offer but also under a main dealers selling price. Inbetween those 2 prices you will always get a buyer.

    Ive always used autotrader

You'll be contacting your insurer to tell them about your change of vehicle anyway, so why not ask them at the same time what they can do about covering both vehicles in the overlap period?

I'm happy to sell privately and will price it to sell, I just hadn't thought about wether it had to be insured whilst off the road, and if it's not insured how do I let anyone take it for a test drive?

You dont let anyone drive it who has not paid first without sight of an insurance certificate which is valid for third party cover for other vehicles or if they get pulled you get points and a hefty fine as well.
    Be happy...;)

so I don't let anyone have a test drive in it before buying?

does that mean I can keep it on my drive uninsured? and if I do sell it would their 3rd party cover them to drive away my car if it wasn't insured by me

If you do sell it's no longer your car or problem.

And what does the OP then do if the car is damaged in a collision for which the person test driving the car is responsible? I'd want them to have fully comp. insurance to test drive a car of mine. And no, they won't have this as standard, it will need to be paid for. Who pays for this would be for the seller and potential buyer to agree I'd suggest.

That isn't what spacey2012 said. Some people will say they won't let a prospective driver have a test drive, but would only drive the car themselves with the buyer in the passenger seat. Personally I wouldn't buy a car under these circumstances, but apparently some people do.
does that mean I can keep it on my drive uninsured?
You can provided you declare it SORN. Also note that if it isn't isured and somebody steals it, you wouldn't be covered.
