It works the same as ironing the wrinkles out of clothes, your hair is sleek and glossy because it has been ironed and if it gets wet just like clothes it's no longer smooth. Ultimately though too much direct heat on your hair will damage it.0

Similarly, my hair looks best when I minimise hair drying use, minimise shampoo use. Surely its easy to experiment with ones own hair and giving up straighteners. The only caveat of course, is that often giving up something that is a plaster covering cracks means things look worse before they get better!:D
I rarely wash my hair more than once a week and condition it each time and I often let it dry naturally before straightening, unless in a hurry, so it's not exactly exposed to a regular heat source or damaged in any way.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

It was only whilst straightening my hair yesterday that this thread popped into my mind and I recalled what my hairdresser had said many years ago, rightly or wrongly. My hair is usually quite 'wiry' and tends to frizz easily if left to it's own devices. When straightened it's sleek and glossy so one would assume the explanation I was given was at least partially correct. My hair dryer also has an ionic feature button.
The ionic feature and the hair looking sleek and glossy is just for when it is styled-to prevent frizz at that point.Nothing more.
Heat damages hair.Straighteners will be more damaging than a hairdryer.
To say they do good is like saying chemical dyes make your hair healthier! If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0

Yes, that's what I'm worried about! I think I'll take Mrs_Ryan's advice and wear a vest underneath it! 0 0
