  • No, because it was an off-the-cuff discussion. Will look at your list now, though.

There were an awful lot more OH didn't like - Miriam, Matthew, Joshua, lots, and lots of them!
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Sounds like NDG and PN could run a master class between them and we could choose a day with some cricket o the TV to keep the Nice Men amused.

Nathan is short for Nathaniel which can be shortened to Nat. How about Rachael? DS was almost Luke.
    I think....

OH and I have just been discussing potential names for the baby. There's a big restriction in that it must make sense in both England and in Israel. That rules out some names I like, such as Charlotte.

I know friends who travel a lot to Israel who have a girl called Charlotte and I can think of at least 2 other friends of friends who have girls called Charlotte, though one shortens to Charlie.

Another option is to have on english name and one hebrew.

It's quite important to OH that it is a real Israeli / Hebrew name - he thinks it helped a lot with Isaac (who suffers, of course, from the massive disadvantage of having a shiksha for a mother.....)

OH isn't terribly keen on the two-names thing, he thinks it a bit confusing, prefers to have one that does for both.

Whcih would be fine, if he wasn't so fussy!

We also can't go for names which sound as if they end or might end with much of a vowel, because of the surname.

But the biggest problem is OH - he doesn't seem to like any names. He said "No!" emphatically to almost all of them, and "maybe" with a very dubious look to a few. I asked him to think of just one name of each gender that he actually liked, and he struggled. Eventually he did decide he didn't actually hate Noah (whcih is out because of the sound at the end) and Naomi.

So poor little sod will probably be Baby NDG until it reaches adulthood!

Some examples - Jonathan (No!), Joseph (No!) David (too commonly-used) Nathan (teenage arsonist), etc.

You could threaten him with if he fails to be more helpful you'll let us pick a name.

Our friends turned down my suggestion of mungo a few years ago for their son. Mungo is much nicer than what they chose.

I've always quite liked the names of those fiery furnace fellows, but i remember them first as Shackup, knees up and and tobedwego. :o.

I share OH's prejudices a bit, on Nathan - it does sound a bit of a teenage-tearaway name to me, too.

I like Luke, not OT enough for OH, though.

IMHO you also need a name that matches Isaac. A bit odd to have one traditional name and another very modern. So that rules out Chardonay (a modern cut on Charlotte).

Here is a website that translates an english name to its hebrew equivalent. Though I'm not convinced how you get from Charlotte to Gavriella.

DD would have been Gabriel if she had been a DS. We liked it but I'm not sure how popular it would have been outside the house.

    OH has already suggested "Ishmael"......

There's a lot more than that which rules out Chardonay (-:

APologies to any NPs with such-named rellies.
