Do any Nice People have tips for dealing with stress? I'm struggling a bit at the moment.

Prof Richard Wiseman's book :59 seconds has a bit about this. He's from the uni of Hertfordshire so must be a Nice Person. Derren Brown's a big fan.

He went through a bunch of self-help books and concluded they're all just theoretical nonsense backed up by no shred of evidence whatsoever. He put together a book of all the things that actually work and for which there's actual evidence (even though there may be no proper theory behind it)

No punching things, expressing your anger. Makes things worse.

Instead, Listening to classics (Vivaldi, Pachelbel) better than jazz, pop or silence, spending 30 minutes in the sun (cave skin cancer obviously), watch comedy funny enough to make you laugh out loud (15 mins minimum), pray for others (but not for yourself). Borrowing a pet or watching a vid of animals.

All a bit random but he says it works and I'd trust him. ;)

Still looking at flats.... found one that might be OK, but no floorplan .... but it has got a pool.

EAs who can't be bothered to do floor plans are a pet peeve of mine.

I really hope that NDG is ok. I'm guessing that she isn't due to the lack of news.

Mrs Generali miscarried before Generalissimo #1 was born and it was horrible. Thoughts are absolutely with her.

I did too, between DS and DD. Horrible is the word. Hoping and praying that NDG is one of the lucky ones for whom a bleed is just a scare and everything's all right.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I read recently that Self Help books don't help the people that are told to read them. They are only good for suckers, was the message. If you believe anything, you'll believe a book.

Yeah, I hate that - layout is key to anybody's lifestyle. Also, putting measurements in metres and not feet/inches..... and, for flats, not mentioning lease or service charges.

Overall, EA details are seriously !!!!!!.

I also despair when they are describing a studio flat and say it's in a particular school catchment area.... who are their target audience? P4ed0s?

    Totally agree

That's the Prof's argument. He implies that there's a huge market but it's filled by amateurish well-meaning types who start with an ounce of theory and work out a ton of supposed implications from this.

He reckons that the whole genre's all just tosh, and the only thing you can trust is evidence even if the theoretical stuff looks more elegant and sensible. And even if there's no background theory at all, just go for the stuff that's backed up by data.

    Sounds fair to me.

Mrs Generali did quite a lot of bleeding during successful pregnancy #2. The Generalissimo in question turned out just fine.

Do any Nice People have tips for dealing with stress? I'm struggling a bit at the moment.

    Compartmentalise the day to day.

Clear separation between work and play.

(I'm crap at that, BTW, as will happily be emailing work things from 7am until 2am the next day, all through dinners, family time, weekends, etc)

But when I get stressed, and actively try to do so, it can work wonders for a while.

And if that doesn't work, then quality time off. Even a day.

I can and do run many consecutive 100 hour weeks when need be, projects demand, etc.

But I've learned that after long enough of that or several months of high stress activity, the only way to "reset" is to take a proper enough break to clear your head.

    Doesn't need to be long.

Even a day can do the trick.

But it has to be absolutely nothing work related at all, no emails, no phone calls, no blackberry, no thinking of work, etc.

Ideally somewhere away from home, without any normal day to day activities, where you can sleep, read, eat, drink, recharge, whatever.

    I've been Money Tipped!
One of the things my GP has suggested is counselling for stress of coming to terms with chronic illness.

I've poo poo'd it, but then waive red. Today I am poo pooing it again. Strong British bits showing...don't really want to I don't think.

Generali, what ever you choose to do I hope it works for you!

    QUOTE]

When my OH and I are out shopping we carry a measuring tape so that we can define what the true measurement is in our language i.e. feet and inches otherwise we are many times totally lost.:(

some might be harder in your location, but these have worked for me when I cannot remove the source of strain and just have to manage myself through it.

Walk amongst trees. Peace and greenery. And breathe. On your own or with your wife.

Art galleries. Favourite paintings or pieces are a complete holiday for my head. Stand/sit in front of them and just look.

Muck out animals or turn/move a compost heap. Earthy, grounded activity that takes an hour or two.

Sex. On your own or with your wife.:)

Look at kittens on the internet. When housebound and unable to think.

NP thread. Connect with non judgemental caring types.
