Decided this evening over dinner that we would put in an offer in the morning. Going to open up £90k under the asking price so I don't think I'll be reporting an accepted offer this time tomorrow but it will be interesting to see whether the agent vomits down the phone at me or not.

Go for it - make enough offers and you will get a bargain. Choose a property that can not be moved into and you reduce your competition by more than half. One thing I discovered when buying the BTL this year, although the agents are paid by the buyer their only interest is getting the deal through even if that means advising the buyer to accept what is on the table now rather than looking around for a better offer.

Has anyone got an opinion on the big fish that are washing up on the shores of California? Apparently the same fish washed up in Japan before the big earthquake there. Are they an advance indicator? It is a horrific thought. I find cues from nature very interesting, such as knowing that the tide can go far out before a tsunami. Here's hoping that the scientists studying this can show that there isn't a link, in spite of the inevitability of a 'big one' one day.

As a lot of NPs have benefitted from post-grad education, you may find this interesting:

I think the angle re UK competitiveness is an interesting one. I'd post this on the board as a thread by itself if I had time, but I need to go to work instead.

Do people buy extended car warranties?

Never done it on a car, do it for vans sometimes, we hit around 60 - 80,000 miles a year and know the problems we are likely to get with a specific make.
Depends how much it costs, what it actually covers and whether it is transferrable if you sell the car within the warranty period I suppose.

Lots of warranties have nasty small print which requires you to submit the car to an annual check at the dealership so if you forget to do this one year then your warranty gets binned. The also tend to have significant exclusions and mileage limits.

One presumes that they wouldn't offer to sell you an optional extended warranty unless they were making money out of it (unlike the warranty you get on purchase of a new car which is more of a tool to get you to buy their brand rather than someone else's).

Agree with chewie, it's not something they expect not to make money out of.

Car is 3 year old and I can take an extended warranty before the 3 yrs is up. This would extend the existing coverage so would offer better coverage than a new scheme. The rate they are quoting is cheaper than warranty direct and auto warranty for 1 year, though more for 2 and 3 years. If I wanted to take the cover after the 3 yrs is up it would cost 30% more and provide less cover.

What's the mileage? And what's the make? Might be worth a post on the motoring board to see if anyone knows of any likely problems with your make of car and make a decision based on likelihood.

Anything less than 150,000 miles and I wouldn't bother though.

Ha, my bro has one of those too with the faded colour. Maybe we should get you both to Santa Pod to see who is faster over a quarter mile. Especially if you pimp your rides first. I'd love to see the looks on the faces of the road warriors if you overtook them in the fast lane on the way there while running nitrous.

Woohoo, I would love that. Put that Multupla in its place! Perhaps I should set up a forum for going pink ex GPO vans;)

Then that's when you know it's time to look at how to change. Know nothing about workplace pensions other than my own, but if you have the option to reduce hours, do it. I'd go for three block days as well, incorporating Monday.

God forbid he should try and look for another me...guy deserves a break next time, huh?

In all seriousness, if he gets hit by a bus I know I won't find another him, why try and have the same relationship again? It would be missing bits. Have a new, different one, just make sure she'll be kind and living to the animals even if she doesn't want more, that's what I say to him. :)

Meditation worked, but condensation back......what the hell am I doing in my sleep?

I think I need to buy another dehumidifier.

I can't see figures in that for numbers of Brits studying post grads abroad? I'm thinking of the 'pure Brits' we know who have done pos grad and even they include people who have done theirs elsewhere for some reason or another. ( and is ou inc in it either? )

I doubt it. So far all attempts to find any kind of advance indicators of earthquakes have come to absolutely nothing, despite decades of details research into all sorts of stuff.

The tide going a long way out before a tsunami is different. The event has already happened, and the wave is on its way. It's just that the trough arrives before the peak does.

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
