I've just setup another payment with Nationwide and have to agree, there 'Make a payment to a new payee' screen is terrible. Not only do they specifically state "Payee Name", "Sort Code", "Account Number", they also ask for "Description" and "Reference", so by common sense you would assume you would need the full Payee name to continue. They don't say anywhere that they don't care about it.

    Ahh fair enough :)

Well onzey's suggestion would suffice as an alternative to mine rather than in addition!

I believe it should be in addition.

It should simply be made clear that only the sort code and account number are used to identify the recipient account (which juicy jesus says all the banks are slowly starting to do) and that if anything is incorrect then the transfer amount is likely to be lost. :)

Santander has a "?" next to "payee name" and when you hover over it, it explains that it's the name that appears on your statement.

In my opinion this is not enough, because someone might think they know what "payee name" means and therefore see no reason to hover over the help link! There needs to be a clear, concise warning on the page itself, not something that's hidden until you hover over something to reveal it.

Well by saying that the money is lost if either the account number or sort code is incorrect, that will imply the account name has nothing to do with it any way!

I don't mind either way, but I do agree with Archi Bold that the amount of text needs to be kept to a minimum otherwise people won't read it all.

I don't in principle disagree with people who keep asking that people are being told that account names are not used, and that using incorrect numbers might lead to payments being lost permanently. Though the latter case will be for an absolutely minute number of cases, since payments to simply incorrect numbers will be rejected, anyway.

What I do object to is huge reems of words on the Faster Payments dialogues. Nobody will read them.

What might be needed is some sort of "bank account driving licence", which could be the pre-req for anyone running a current account. It could be mandatory to re-qualify for that driving licence every 5 or so years, too. Or at least, people without this "driving licence" wouldn't be allowed to make Faster Payments, set up DDs, or use debit cards.

So, just like you don't need to read the Highway Code every time you want to get across a roundabout, Faster Payments shouldn't need reems of words every time you want to make one. But it should be ensured that everyone making a Faster Payment has read and understood the rules relating to Faster Payment.

But I got to come back to the Smart Phone, Facebook, iPad etc example - - - how come people can learn to handle those devices but they can't figure out how Faster Payments work?

A less dictating method would be to show a confirmation page every time a faster payment is sent saying to check that all of the account details are correct because, if they're not, the payment may go astray and will not be able to be claimed back.

This page could also provide instructions of how to turn off these confirmation pages, once someone understands what is being, so as not to annoy people who obviously know already.

So even after clicking 'send,' 'pay,' or whatever, it would pop up an 'are you sure?' type page.

So why not remove the confusion? Get rid of "Payee name" completely as it's misleading. E.g.

    Sort Code: 00-00-00
    Account Number: 00000000
Description: [For your reference, will appear on your statement]
    Reference: [For payee reference]

    Another good suggestion :)
