Another vote for the Nexus 7 here. It's a fab bit of kit, very useable, very reliable and there are apps you can get to connect with certain printers so you can print documents, pictures etc. I've had mine for over a year now and wouldn't be without it. Don't forget teh current Nexus may drop in price soon as the new Nexus tablet has just been annouced (sorry can't remember the release date for the new one but I think it's later this year!)
Looks like it could be 29th August http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/features/tablets/3460242/new-nexus-7-2-release-date-price-specs/
2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shading
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Happens the same on all the different PCs/laptops in the house, new and old, despite all exceeding Skype's minimum spec requirements :(

Is your broadband a bit flaky in general or just with Skype? i.e. Can you watch something like BBCiplayer ok?

Another thought, is there anyone doing a load of heavy downloading all the time, thus interfering with your bandwidth when using Skype? Reason I ask, was a good while back I had to ask hubby to stop whatever he was doing, so that I could get a decent connection on Skype. Our internet connection was horrific at the time, and ended up changing ISP.

  • Oooh thanks for that - I know the OH has held off a tablet purchase for a while but now he keeps nicking my Nexus! He was talking about getting one of these when they come out so at least I know how much longer I have to wait before I no longer have to fight him for it (Unless I get myself the nice shiny new one and donate the old one to him :D:D:D )
Everyone has a dark side... apparently mine is called Harold?!?

It's generally fine during the day but in the evenings (say from about 7pm onwards) it's so unreliable as to be almost not worth bothering.
Trying to watch iPlayer (through wii connected to TV) is also not possible during the evening (keeps stopping and we get an error message about 'insufficient bandwidth').

This happens even if there's only one device connected.

I have been wondering if it's worth changing our ISP, we're with Virgin ATM and have been with them for years.
(We have neither cable nor BTInfinity here, and wouldn't have Sky)

Do you know if you are a long way from your telephone exchange?

Use samknows to see if any LLU operators are available at your exchange

LLU operators can usually offer higher download speeds.

However it also shows FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) services available so might be worth trying to find out when this might be available to you.

Also, might be worth starting another thread about your broadband if you want to keep this one on topic about tablets/iPads. :)

One problem at a time, maybe :D
I'm not sure how/why we went off on this tangent :o

My fault really picking up on mention of your flaky broadband.

There was a green tick against FTTC and it says services available.

My (limited) understanding is this means the roll out of superfast broadband has begun in your area meaning broadband will be available via fibre optic cables from the exchange to cabinets in the street. It still uses copper wire from the cabinet to the houses.

If you are too far from a cabinet or there is not enough take up for superfast from a particular cabinet then you may not be able to get it. You did say BT Infinity wasn't "here" but is that after checking recently?

    Anyway I'm rambling on again.

Read more here and do a check perhaps
