I'm thinking that the Wi-Fi will probably do me fine. I don't think I'd use 3G enough to want to pay a monthly charge (which is how I'm guessing it would work?)
with Wifi you will not be able to use out and about unless you find a wifi hotspot.
Personally i have a Blackberry and a Blackberry Playbook. As long as you have the Blackberry phone in the same location as the Playbook then you can use the phones connection to browse on the Playbook as long as you activate Blackberry services with your phones provider. I am sure its the same principle with the iPhone and iPad0 -
MaybeI'd heed their praise and buy one. Apple don't get that sort of endorsement for nothing.
I just don't like being 'told' what to do and don't like bandwagons of any kind.
TBH I find the whole Facebook/Twitter etc thing totally off-putting and bizarre (and slightly juvenile, if I'm honest) and everyone I know who raves about their i-gadgets are the ones who seem to be unable to function without these

Surely you mean that you just can't connect to the internet without a Wi-Fi hotspot (fair enough)?earthstorm wrote: »with Wifi you will not be able to use out and about unless you find a wifi hotspot.

Not that you will not be able to use at all
Presumably you can still use it for other things when not connected to Wi-Fi?

Well that's something that you would have to think about. There are other options available such as Skype. No matter what device you went for, as long as you and your daughter had the same app, you could still see her to chat. Skype is available for Apple devices.jackieblack wrote: »I keep hearing that communication between Apple devices is simple/easier, but I'm not clear on how? or why?
I really can't help you out here with that. I don't think that it's any easier, all methods that I've used are easy (I've used other Voip type services too). Possibly it is as I mentioned in my last post, that even if Facetime is not running, you still will get calls. Whereas with other VOIP apps such as Skype, you have to have them running and be signed in....and if people forget, then you are unable to contact them.
Hopefully someone else will be able to help you here with a proper answer.0 -
Unfortunately, Skype 'kills' my (slightly temperamental) broadband connectionAnne_Marie wrote: »Well that's something that you would have to think about. I won't be getting an iPhone
things like checking weather etc. need an internet connection, but for taking photos/videos etc. then no connection is needed.0 -

Ah, sorry forgot about that. Wonder how your connection would get on with Facetime then? Is there any chance that you could get someone with an Apple device to try out Facetime at your house to see how it goes?0 -

Had the same issue, but it was not the broadband causing the issue, it was the PC.
When i installed Skype my PC would slow to less than a crawl. I increased the memory and this issue vanished.0 -
That's a good idea, thanks, I'll investigate thatAnne_Marie wrote: »Ah, sorry forgot about that. Wonder how your connection would get on with Facetime then? Is there any chance that you could get someone with an Apple device to try out Facetime at your house to see how it goes?

Happens the same on all the different PCs/laptops in the house, new and old, despite all exceeding Skype's minimum spec requirements
