Just watched it the last couple who wanted an £8k car for £6,500 were well and truly done up like kippers. They started off all bullish with a very low offer, but then it was a great lesson in why not to negotiate around a monthly repayment figure.

It started off with a £750 discount and a 4 year term at about £165 a month and ended up £995 discount, but a 5 year term at £150 a month which they went with.

Deal one £7,920 saving on car £80
Deal two £9,000 saving on car -£1,000

    Oops.

Ahhh, so you're one of those people that 'count' interest in how much you paid for a car? I've never understood that, but anyways.

It's always going to cost more to borrow money for 12 months longer - the people must have been putting in some amount of deposit (I think £500 was mentioned) as the payments don't stack up otherwise. Quite often the rate goes up when you exceed 48 months too.

An additional saving of just £245 is never going to cancel an extra year out, if that makes sense.
And that my son, is how to waft a towel!

Well the total cost is what you pay so interest does matter, especially if you see a high APR.

They wanted the car for £6,500. In truth they wanted to pay £150 a month. These are two different negotiations. I missed the deposit part, but this makes the situation worse and shows they didn't know what they wanted or how much they were actually paying, a salesman's dream

With a £500 deposit they paid £9,500 for a car they wanted for £6,500. If they wanted the car for £6,500 and £150 a month with a £500 deposit there should be 40 payments, not 60. Only possible with 0% apr, but that's the basic maths they needed before entering into negotiations.

The Range Rover dreamer was the same. No idea what his negotiation position was.
