Am I correct in thinking that a Fiat 500 is basically a Ford Ka ?
    - same floorpan etc ?

Not quite. The 'new' Ford Ka shares the same floorpan as the 500 and is assembled at the 500/Panda plant in Poland by Fiat. I believe the engines used in the Ka are also supplied by Fiat.

There is no Chrysler in modern Fiats.

There is Fiat in modern Chryslers, but that's just a badging exercise.

Not that that is a bad thing. Other than the GEMA engines (co-developed with Hyundai and Mitsubishi, and pretty solid), there is very little to recommend about the pre-Fiat Chryslers on sale in Europe.

dont under estimate what fiat are doing, fiat moved into the US and india, using both chrylser delta and the 300 500L the delta is pretty little car IMHO and seen plenty around my area.

fiat have the majority of the shares from the US, and controls chrysler, chrysler never took here, although having driven the 2nd gen neon LX, i was surprised with it, although parts extremely high priced (excluding the service bits) and can be hard come by the unit produced in the neon (mitsibushi engine and merc diesels) is a strong runner with 130bhp and decend handling, reminded of the 90's honda powered rover 620 without the bulk that being a pre fiat ownership. delta is pretty nice inside aswell.

I don't underestimate what Fiat are doing with Chrysler, merely pointing out that there is no Chrysler input whatsoever in the cars that Fiat are currently putting out in Europe.

The 'Chrysler' Delta is a Lancia with an American badge. I think that's daft -- Lancia is a company with a much better heritage than the American mongrel responsible for such horrors as the Alpine and Horizon!

Regarding the older Chryslers, I did acknowledge that the predominantly Mitsubishi-designed GEMA engines were, and are, strong and reliable. It's just a shame that Chrysler build quality of the period was lamentable.
