My, you've been thinking about this. I particularly like (2) and (4).
How about:
11. Each one is a challenge in its own unique way;
12. When you experience a bad one, you know what to do differently next time;
13. You don't take one on without expecting to work hard at it.
Yep, I can see those, we're challenging and hard work - can't deny that!:p
What about:
14. The best ones take you to romantic cities?
15. When you finally decide to go for one, it suddenly seems a lot more daunting?
16. The rough, rugged ones are best avoided?
17. Best to go easy with it early on if you want it to last?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hi Becky - well, the 6 miles last weekend is the furthest I've done so far, been a few 3-4 milers inbetween, but I am finding it quite hard to get motivated - but that's life in general at the moment, not just running. Yep, it's lovely here today too, but it'll be dark by the time I leave work.. sob!Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0

Are those points referring to men or marathons? I'm lost now :rotfl:
I'm sitting here at work with little to do and feeling like I want to go back to bed (to be fair I always feel like that this time of year :rolleyes: ).
Marathon training report: Last night did 8x600m with 200m recovery with the club. I've no idea of times as I'd forgotten my watch in the rush to get out before the sofa and fleece claimed me:cool: . The last two I did slowly to see if my breathing would be better and it was. I really must remember to start slow then build up as I tend to start fast then fade - my natural 'inclination' ever since I started running all those years ago :rolleyes:
I'm cycling home this evening so my 6 miles in 70mins will be done on Friday instead. Am starting to feel excited and a little scared now!The 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -
Okay, well following yesterday's abandoned interval session (due to high winds), today's session was also abandoned after a couple of miles.
The legs are fine, in fact stronger than ever and have clearly recovered from Sunday's 12-miler. Today was feeling all set up for the first sub-50 minute 10K on about a 120 pulse effort. Through the first mile that was certainly looking like the case.
However, on the downhill sections the breathing just wasn't coming back quickly enough, nothing serious just not fully functioning.
As I've said in the past, I'll abandon runs for the smallest of reasons if I'm not happy with everything and this was one of them. There are two likely explanations:
1. The energy delivery system needs more recovery time.
2. There is a virus just getting into the system which will show up in a couple of days.
There would have been no problem in completing 10K today, but it would have been laboured and could have had negative consequences later in the week. It is worth sacrificing sessions like this for the benefit of the overall goals.
So it may look bad sacrificing two sessions in two days, but it isn't - just part of the ebb and flow!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Did my fastest 10k last night, 53:45 which is 3 mins better than previously, great!
But my pulse averaged 187, with a peak of 197. How do you get to run with such a low pulse rate? I'm doing about 15 miles per week, including a long, slow run of about 8 miles where my pulse rate is about 160, but 120 is walking pace, let alone sub 50min 10k!0 -

My resting pulse is 40 so thats half the story. Very easy runs are done about 85-90, regular steady runs about 120 and hard quality sessions about 140, although that will rise to 160, but 187-197 is incredibly high.
I'm not even sure it is medically possible to maintain a rate like that for 50 minutes plus. You're obviously pretty fit so I'm puzzled by that. What is your own resting pulse?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Dont let Rich fool you - his resting pulse is about 40!
The best way to find out what yours related to your workload is to measure a number of different runs and then compare with your resting pulse...not that I can talk I cant even find mine
Sorry to hear about the abadoned run Rich...hope you havent got a virus and its just a slower recovery than expected.
Note to self - dont cross post when you dont have all the facts! Not about 40 is 40!0 -
Haven't tested proper resting HR (i.e when just woken up, still in bed etc) but sat here at my desk its about 64bpm, so probably about 55-60. My Max HR ever recorded was 206bpm.
Didn't realize I was a mystery to medical science. I have joked that my HR monitor is so that I can check that I'm not actually dead when I'm running0 -

Everything else sounds okay, including that 206, but you surely can't get that close to maximum and maintain for 50+ minutes.
Your resting pulse is about what you would expect, so you're not abnormal.:p
You may be right, but it looks mighty high!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Well, I use a Polar HRM to record it, so it's as accurate as that is. Maintaining an average of 187bpm isn't easy (I was pretty knackered at the finish and my calves seized up!), but keeping it below 160 when running certainly is.
Did your Resting rate come down much when you started running? I'm assuming that a RHR of 40bpm wasn't something you were born with.
I've only been doing this about 9 months, and haven't noticed much of a drop in heart rate.0
