Yes you can Sally. That visualisation is a great one. Also try visualising yourself running strongly with the 20 mile marker in front of you. This is a crucial point. One of my visualisations is Tower Bridge which is the halfway mark and a big vantage point. See and hear the crowds cheering you on. Take in the architecture and the view from the river. Feel that sense of achievement of reaching this point and how good you feel.
Visualise yourself running in a relaxed confident way and breathing smoothly and regularly.
Thank you Chris. I have copied this and put it in my running diary (get me getting all Geeky!) for me to use when I think about the LM. Now can you remember who was it who had some hypnotherapy before the LM last year? Im sure there was someone on here.I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. Sally,
The training plan incorporates this in that you are trying to take as many unknowns away from the race itself.
The 20 mile race prior to the marathon is a visualisation exercise (ie you won't be running it to cover 20 miles as quickly as possible) and the aim will be to get to the 20 mile mark feeling as comfortable as possible.
You will then be able to visualise this run over and over again giving you a much better idea how its going to feel on the day.
As for the half inch - I had a wager going on who would bite first (maybe not the best phrase) and Snaggles was well up there in the betting! However, I'm surprised at you Sally

Should you consciously try to make your stride a little longer then, or wait for it to happen naturally the stronger your muscles get?
As an aside, I HAVE to visualise getting to the end of my run constantly, otherwise I just wouldn't make it - it really does work.
No, never try to increase stride length in normal running - it will lead to injury almost inevitably through overstretching.
The only time you 'stride out' is during fartleks and intervals, but it still must be very controlled and limited.
But stride length does increase with strengthened muscles. This is why walking increases running speed through strengthening tendons and ligaments. Hard running on untrained muscles is just about the worst way to get improvements in stride length.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hi everyone,
I have to own up to not running yesterday, despite my good intentions. Shortly after lunch I had a funny turn at work. Never happened before, but it was quite scary. I started to feel very hot, and got flashing lights before my eyes. Then the sound started to fade out, as if everyone was far away. I stood up and staggered out into the main office where our first-aider is. She took one look at me, grabbed a chair for me and put a fan on me. After about 15 minutes, and a stagger to the loo to be sick, I felt fine. I was very embarrassed though.
Anyway, I got home, changed into my jimmies and snuggled on the sofa all evening. I was in bed by 9, watching silent witness.
Still don't know what caused it, but I'm feeling much better today. May manage a short 2.5 miles tonight as I am out to a birthday party later.
Good to hear that another of our number has a FLM place.
Re:the visualisation thing, golfers travel with psychologists too. I also remember watching some of the gymnasts at the olympics mentally practicing their routines before they went on and did it for real. Amazing thing, the mind. A running friend of mine used to have a running mantra that she would say to herself (in her head) 'smooth, sleek, fast'. She swore it helped her to run that way.Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90
