I'm going with media-hyped storm in a teacup, but I'm rarely right. Good job my occupation doesn't call for great judgement and decision making......

I'm afraid thats unlikely.
The media have known for months how dangerous causing panic would be and have, therefore, been doing quite the opposite and playing things down.
They didn't even report the biggest bank in world going under except as a very small footnote.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Yeah I know - but I'm the eternal optimist!

I think the media played a big part to begin with, there was a huge amount of misinformation about what the credit crunch actually was, and what impact it would have - but I agree, they are being rather restrained at the moment."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -
Hey everybody, just dropping in to say hi, cos I've been absent the weekend! Think my personal trainer worked me far to hard on Weds nite, and havent had chance to do anything fitness wise this weekend! However, netball tonight, so I'm sure I'll make up for what I've missed!0

Have been on an endorphin high since I got up this morning - have been annoying all day - despite one of my knees being a bit *sore*..
However, I think I have just crashed and burned.....knackered now!
Not running today - rest day...going to do a class tomorrow after work, then a 4 mile run on Wednesday, weight training with personal trainer on Thursday, quick 15-20 min run on friday - not sure what to do on Sat - then a 5 mile race on sunday.Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

Hi all, struggling to keep up here as they're actually making me work at work! Bit achy from yesterday but not too bad, really tired though as I had a restless night last night. Anyway, next run on Wednesday I think, not sure if morning or evening.
I've been meaning to ask, when we were talking about marathon places I'm sure someone mentioned people paying large amounts because they hadn't managed to raise enough for their charity places, and I've been thinking about just how ridiculous that is! I kind of understand it when it comes to things like these charity treks abroad but it seems almost counter-productive to me to put that much pressure on people. I've got a charity place for the Edinburgh Marathon and just checked the paperwork which says that they ask that you attempt to raise £500 but it's not a legally binding contract or a requirement of the place that you meet the target - much more sensible if you ask me.Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0 -
Hi redquizzer, i don't know a lot about the charity places and money thing, but is it to stop people just getting a marathon place via the charity route and then not raising money. IYSWIMQuality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

Hi Red,
The London is different to any other races because of the level of oversubscription.
The charities have to pay around £200 for each place (in fact, it may be higher than that now). So, they are putting charity money at risk by buying places. They have to view it as a business risk and build in the places they lose through drop-outs that can't be replaced and such like.
Its gone too far, in that is very lucrative for the London organisers so over the years they have diverted more places down the charity route by taking them out of the ballot route. It favours one-time runners and discriminates against regular club runners which just doesn't quite seem right!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Yeah, I understand that they want people to take it seriously, but I think some of the amounts they expect seem really high, and I wonder how many people are put off by it, and if the charities might end up losing out in the long run. It's a bit like these charity collectors in the street who want you to set up a direct debit - if they had a collecting tin they'd get a couple of quid off me, as it is they get nothing (I do have one regular payment set up to a charity but can't stretch to any more). Dunno.. just rambling
