    Hi all,

Well, I haven't run since my 8 miler on Saturday due to cold. Played football last night, not sure that helped much. Wasn't at my best as not 100%, but was needed to make up the numbers to avoid losing by default. The things you do for your team! As it was we lost anyway!

Am now feeling better and think I'll be back to normal tomorrow, so will do a run in the morning and a big 'un on Sunday. My legs are very fidgety under my desk. Might take my full 1 hour lunch break and go for a nice long walk to get them to calm down a bit!

Some very encouraging posts. It's important to remember that this isn't punishment, it's something we're doing for ourselves! If that means we want to push to be able to run further, that's great. But if we only want to get to a stage of running 2 km once or twice a week to improve and maintain fitness, that's just as good.

Maz, well done on the progress. I know you'll be running 4 miles soon. I know because you want to and that will make it happen in itself. If it happens now or in a month's time, it really doesn't matter. Even if our progress ends up slowing right down, it's still progress and should be viewed as such.

    Afternoon!

Not feeling too bad after my exertion yesterday, apart from an achy neck, but I think that could have just been how I slept.

I didn't run this morning, I've ordered the insoles and am going to wait until they arrive before I do much more, because I really need to not get an injury.

I did brave the scales finally yesterday though, and have lost 10lbs in 3 weeks, bloody hell!

    That was quite motivating anyway!

Can I ask a question about breathing when you are running?

Is there a best way to do it? Or is it just a case of breath however you want, just try to avoid inhaling flies?

I've Googled it a bit and found, as usual, varying theories. Some suggesting a 3 strides breathing in:2 strides breathing out ratio, breathing in through your nose as well as your mouth, but I'm finding I'm doing more like 2:2.

Should I be trying to breath differently?

Edit - sorry, that's not very clear - what I mean is I breath in for two steps, then out for two.

    Fantastic progress!

The sessions like yesterday can't do anything other than improve your fitness - but the benefits are always 3-5 days delayed so you always have a bit of a downer in between where you just have to take it easy.

As far as breathing is concerned - it knows what its doing, forget about it. Your breathing will simply improve over time, you don't have to think about it. But, as seems to be a most apt phrase 'this is a leisure activity not a punishment regime' so if the breathing gets difficult stop there's no rush.

    But well done!

Interesting you should say that, I was just gonna ask grandpa Rich a question on that myself! :)

I was just talking over the 10k with one of my running mates at work and mentioned that 90% of people seemed to be breathing harder than me...even at the 3k mark, I was running along minding my own business, but could hear everyone around me breathing quite hard...

When I run, I think I tend to take quite deep, but quite slow breaths, certainly until, I'd say, the last 20% of whatever I'm doing, when I feel I need a little more "oomph" to keep me going and start to breathe a bit faster. Other people certainly wouldn't be able to hear my breathing while I'm running. The question is, then, if I don't need to breathe that hard all the way, am I actually pushing myself hard enough, or should you be expecting to be breathing heavily the whole way round? I *am* a bit out of breath while I run, I can hold conversations etc, it's certainly harder than normal, but is that enough?
  • Ooh, I'm in a good mood now!!:):)

Just done another steady 10K which continues the pattern of training effect(see below) but more importantly the legs are really starting to feel strong now which is a very positive sign. Just need to work on the abdominals over the next 5 weeks to gets some definition back into them (these play a big part in knee lift) and should be ready for a training program.

    Mon 15/9 Rest
    Tues 16/9 10K 1:15:15 (Pulse 130)
Weds 17/9 6.5 miles Brisk Walk
Thurs 18/9 7.0 miles Brisk Walk
    Fri 19/9 10K 1:06:36 (Pulse 130)
Sat 20/9 6.5 miles Brisk Walk
    Sun 21/9 8.0 miles Brisk Walk (2hrs 20mins)
Mon 22/9 7.0 miles Brisk Walk
    Tues 23/9 10K Run/Walk (Stopped 4 miles, couple of niggles - 5K 30:59)
    Weds 24/9 6.5 miles Brisk Walk (1hrs 48mins)
    Thurs 25/9 10K 1:04:11 (Pulse 132)

Grandpa? (No, its OK I'm in a good mood after all :p)

As you go up the distance the proportion of aerobic activity increases and the proportion of anaerobic activity decreases. 10K is a long way and predominantly aerobic. To put that in perspective - in a flat out 10K you shouldn't really be able to have a full conversation but you should be able to exchange a few thoughts with the guy next to you without panting or cutting words short.

We should be trained at faster than 10K pace before going in for a 10K, hence fartleks and such like so 10K pace in itself should be relatively comfortable.

It sounds like you've got it about right!

Tee Hee - I know I breathe heavily (or am really heavy footed) because when I run people often turn around to see what the noise is HAHAHA!

Its okay though, I listen to loud music so cant hear myself (apart from 'internally' of course)...recently though I've caught myself singing along while running, hmm this could get embarassing.

Nice one Rich - thats a lot of activity.

Ur Snaggs - 10lbs in 3 weeks - no fair! Can I have some of what you're having please...
  • snaggles to give you my non professional opinion on the breathing...

i don't really think about it too much until i have to but when i get to the breathless-ish stage, i tend to focus and do a sort of

    1 2 3 4
    step-step-breathe out,
plod-plod- exhale but blowing it out over 2 steps,

I don't have to do this for long, but it definately brings my breathing back into line it it's gone awry....
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....
    (it's part of my charm!)
