Please could someone help me set some targets so I have something to aim for?

Basically I want to feel like I'm a 'proper' runner, but am feeling a bit out of my depth.

What should I be aiming for, as a starting point? And a longer term goal?

(I'm aware this is a very vague sort of question, but if anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate them - I feel like I have a bit of momentum with this at the moment and want to keep that going)

    :)

Stiffness from football is more likely because of lateral stress on knees and hips - there's twisting and jarring movements which you don't get in running.

The rest has helped the training effect take hold. You seem to be doing enough even now to be still moving forward because of the 4+ mile criteria. Sub 45mins will be an absolute walk in the park, on the evidence presented, as soon as you want to target it!

Yes, I think I'll be listening to you more often! ;) Thanks for the vote of confidence RE the 45 min 10Ks. You know who I'll be pestering for a training plan though, don't you? :p

What kind of times have you got in the past snaggles? Talk us through the kind of runs (pace, distance) you do at the moment and whether you want to improve distance, pace or both.

    Um.... :o

Well, I run the school run.....sometimes via the park..... :rotfl:

I really am a complete beginner. I mean, I run around after 2 kids all day, and play a bit of squash....but other than that, running is completely new to me.

I'm not even sure what distance I run, only that it takes about 15 minutes and I don't do it very fast. So I want to run further, although at this stage I'm not worried about faster.

Sorry, I am crap! :o Now you see why I need help!

  • Well done for setting your targets Rich (us, give you grief, as if!)

As we're putting things down on 'paper', here's mine - slightly less ambitious, may be revised as I see how things go - copied from my RealBuzz page (the countdowns are live on the actual page, which is a bit scary!):

    Goal: 5k in 30 mins
    Date: 30/10/2008
    Countdown: 1 month, 7 days, 10 hours, 20 minutes, 22 seconds

    Goal: 10k in 55 minutes
    Date: 31/12/2008
    Countdown: 3 months, 8 days, 10 hours, 20 minutes, 22 seconds

Goal: 10 miles in 2 hours
    Date: 31/03/2009
    Countdown: 6 months, 8 days, 10 hours, 20 minutes, 22 seconds

    Event: Sheffield Half Marathon
    Date: 26/04/2009
    Description: Aiming for 2.5 hours
    Countdown: 7 months, 3 days, 10 hours, 20 minutes, 22 seconds

    Event: Edinburgh Marathon
    Date: 31/05/2009
    Countdown: 8 months, 8 days, 10 hours, 20 minutes, 22 seconds

Wow, it's good to be ambitious Rich! Do you think times like these are achievable for relative newbie runners like myself? I was thinking more along the lines of a 3hrs 30 min target for London 2010 myself :rotfl:

You can't really say until you tick off a few markers along the way. But to have a crack at 3hrs 30 mins you would need to have achieved a 44-45 min 10K and 1-35 Half Marathon. These don't look at all demanding for your circumstances.

However, it is very difficult to run your first marathon as a time trial - you need to conquer the distance first.

The way I got down to the times stated was simply by absorbing every bit of information I could find from people who were running at least those times and ignoring the rubbish from the 'Injury Promotion Industry' (The mass market mags are fondly termed in this way by runners and coaches! :p).

I would ask the guys who were ahead of me in races about their training - runners love talking about their training so its a fantastic source of info. If you find out how 5 guys running sub 35 mins for 10K are training the chances are you'll have a pretty good picture of whats needed!

As for your ultimate time there just isn't enough data yet. There needs to be a pattern of what training leads to what results. But just bear in mind my first marathon was 4hrs 12mins and first 1/2 marathon 1hrs 35mins which came down to 2hrs 48mins and 1hrs 12mins by picking brains!

    Abingdon Marathon 17/10/2010, (Target=2:48:57) (6:27/mile)

Well it sounds like the first thing to do is build your run gradually up to 5km, which is about 40 mins slow running (though it's hard to tell how slow "slow" is!). You'd do hard, easy, hard, easy, though I'm sure Rich can draw up a decent plan for you, starting at about 1.5-2K I guess.

Snags, I started off running one minute and walking one minute, and I aimed to do the Race for life.. I then upped my running minutes bit by bit.. I can now run for 10 mins at a time, but I still stop for a minutes rest every so often, I can now easily run 6 miles like this and although without fail I find the first 10-20 mins hardwork I always start to feel great half way round and then don't really want to stop.

My problem is fitting in the time to run..its hard when OH works away all the time..

Thanks again for the info Rich. I'll certainly be covering marathon distance in training, but do you think I should also do a marathon (race) in preparation? And generally speaking, how many races should I do at the various distances before London 2010?
